Xbox One (bought in 2015) disconnects from Live consistently every 30 minutes

    Hey all,

Been having a lot of trouble with my Xbox. I'm a big Destiny player, and naturally when the new game came out, I was pumped to play. However, I had an issue right away. Every 30 or so minutes I would get the Canary error, which is a total loss of internet
connection that boots me to the home screen. This means I have to log in again, and try and get back to whatever activity I was doing. I realized Destiny isn't the only thing to have this problem. Overwatch also kicked me out regularly, and during Netflix
streaming, there would be occasional significant dips in streaming quality, and occasionally I would have to pause and allow a video to buffer.

The bigger issue here, is that these problems have occurred in no way on my other devices, such as my computer and phone, meaning the problem isn't in the network, it's in the box. I've had the Xbox about 2 years now and the only other issue it's had is
that it won't always pick up on a controller power up. Instead, the controller will flash as if looking for an Xbox, and even after I turn the console on by hand, the two won't connect wirelessly. A hard reset is the only thing that fixes it.

Now, given that both of these problems are wireless, I wonder if there may be a connection. I've heard of issues with the Xbox one's wireless chip before.

My current situation is that I live in a dorm, in a house of eight. Two floors of four, with a router for each floor. When I talked to IT, they said the router must be experiencing congestion. Obviously that's ridiculous because the router only covers four
people, the speeds can get up to 80mbps download and over 60 on upload, and only one other person who uses it even regularly does high package activities like gaming. So that idea seems bust.

Ethernet is not a possibility, because the college could fine me for tampering with the router, and I'd have to run it along a hallway and under my door, requiring at least 30 feet of cord I don't really want to pay for, plus tape that will stay but not
    cause damage.

The wireless connection does go through a wall, but that's entirely usual and I've never had problems before aside from occasional latency issues and every now and then getting booted from games. But I remind you, I can set a timer and know when I'll get
disconnected down to the minute. And to further give proof that it's something with the console, the timer starts as soon as I connect. It's not on the 6th and 36th minute of every hour, it's thirty minutes after I turn my xbox on.

So, looking for solutions. I didn't shell out money for a console that was only going to last me 2 years with decent quality of life. I played my 360 for 6 years and never had an issue. I could pull it out now and it would work great. So please, give me
a way to fix this so I can stop being mad.

Much appreciated Xbox One (bought in 2015) disconnects from Live consistently every 30 minutes :)

    :)

    Xbox Disconnecting Me

I know this is a month ago, but I have a similar situation.

Xbox One (bought in 2015) disconnects from Live consistently every 30 minutes

    Link to my post.

Have you figured out a fix for this? I disconnect very consistently every 30 minutes. I'm not positive when it started, but this timeline seems pretty likely for me. Was there a software update that messed everything up?

My detailed Network Diagnostic gives the following information:

    [*]Download Speed = 62.70 Mbps
[*]Upload Speed = 57.78 Mbps (Both upload and download have been higher. I've seen 82/66)
    [*]Latency = 39ms
    [*]Packet Loss = 0% (I've seen 1 or 2% before)
[*]Wireless Strength = 88% (Has been up to 98% before)

Also it's not random times that I disconnect. It seems to happen every 20-30 minutes. I fully disconnect from Xbox Live altogether.

Please? Can anyone give me some help here? Not necessarily looking for official help although that would be amazing. After a while I'm just going to have to call and go through the hell of microsoft support.

    Hey Mage,

Thanks for posting! Just a heads up, the way a gaming console connects to a wireless router is much different than your phone and PC, and unfortunately the issue you're describing is a common one for many college dorms, but let's
gather some information before we determine what the issue is. Are you able to provide the following information so we can try to take a deeper look?

    Run a
    Detailed network statistics test
on your Xbox One console to provide most of the following results:

    • Router model & brand:
    • Modem model & brand:
    • ISP:
    • Download:
    • Upload:
    • Wireless Strength:
    • Packet loss:

    Keep us posted!

Thanks for the help. It's been impossible to play with my friends from home, which is the main way I connect with them socially anymore. Plus it just sucks.

Below are my stats pulled from about the time of this OP. I had commented on a different post with these stats because the person there was asked from them.

I've submitted an IT ticket, but who knows if they can do anything. No one else on the floor really seems to have this problem, since none of them game on consoles, if at all.

My detailed Network Diagnostic gives the following information:

    [*]Download Speed = 62.70 Mbps
[*]Upload Speed = 57.78 Mbps (Both upload and download have been higher. I've seen 82/66)
    [*]Latency = 39ms
    [*]Packet Loss = 0% (I've seen 1 or 2% before)
[*]Wireless Strength = 88% (Has been up to 98% before)
[*]Cisco AIR, but I can't be sure of the model type
[*]Can't confirm ISP or modem. Potentially the router is also the modem?

Not sure if this is relevant, but my Xbox also sometimes doesn't connect wirelessly to my controllers and I have to hard reset. Occasionally if I connect via cord, it gets done and I can detach the cord and it stays connected. But more often than not, even
after getting positive feedback from the controller on a wired connection, the Xbox still won't recognize the equipment and refuses to connect. Repairing obviously doesn't work here either.

If the Xbox is using the same tech to connect to the wifi and the controllers, could this also be a problem?

Xbox One (bought in 2015) disconnects from Live consistently every 30 minutes

For how long have you had this problem with continuous disconnections with your Xbox One?

Do you connect your Xbox One to the same SSID (logical name of your college wireless network), as you do with your PC? If so, do you authenticate using the same method as with most SOHO wireless router implementations, with the use of a password/passphrase?

As soon as you're signed out, go run the Xbox one "Detailed network statistics" test, and have us know the outcome of that test. Also, take note if your console is still connected to the SSID.

Surely the IT staff of your college are monitoring their wired/wireless infrastructure, so, potentially, they should be able to find security logs or event logs that would point to an issue with your console (under normal circumstances). As you claimed, you
are able to pinpoint whenever you get signed out. I think this is your best shoot, of finding the culprit.

As I always recommend; switch from Instant-On mode to Energy-saving power mode. The Instant-on power mode opens up a can of worms (in my opinion).

Could try place your Xbox One in a different location inside of your room and see if the RSSI (signal strength) value changes. Hopefully for the better.

Even though your PC doesn't seem to experiencing any issues with connectivity to the wireless network, could you run the following netsh command from your PC, as a very simple way to determine your PCs wireless adapters signal strength/Tx/Rx rates/BSSID/Authentication/Cipher
    etc.

You can paste the following text in to notepad and save, or rename, the file exstension to .bat. Click on the .bat file and it will loop the "netsh wlan show interfaces" command on a given time interval. You could have the command running in the background
whilst you play on your Xbox One and as soon as your signed out, abort the command, or just close the session window. This will generate a report in .txt format with timestamps. Keep your eye open for any degradation in signal strength, or if the BSSID changes
(MAC address), which would indicate that the client roams from one AP to another (not lilkely) in a multiple channel architecture.

    :loop

    set time_hh=%time:~0,2%

    if %time_hh% lss 10 (set time_hh=0%time:~1,1%)

    set time_mn=%time:~3,2%

    set time_ss=%time:~6,2%

    set time_ms=%time:~9,2%

    echo %time_hh%:%time_mn%:%time_ss%.%time_ms% >> WLANstat_%date:~-4,4%%date:~-7,2%%date:~-10,2%.txt

    netsh WLAN show interfaces >>WLANstat_%date:~-4,4%%date:~-7,2%%date:~-10,2%.txt

First, I have had this problem since getting to school, around late August. I don't believe I had it before when I was home, but I didn't play a whole lot of Xbox over the summer, so I may have simply not noticed.

I do connect to the same Router, but it is not password protected. Open network with a strict NAT type.

I will try and run the diagnostic test on my xbox the next time I'm playing, though I believe I have before and didn't notice any appreciable difference in speed or strength. And when I have gone to network settings right as it happens, it still lists as
    being connected to the network.

IT has taken my ticket, but it is unclear how long that till take and I don't think I can request event logs. I have a friend in IT, so I can ask him. While looking through the logs, what exactly should I be looking for?

I have changed from Instant on to Energy saving mode, so maybe that will help at least with the connectivity of the controllers or something like that.

I have considered moving my xbox around. The thing is I don't understand how that could help much, as I live at the end of a very short hall. Granted, I'm furthest from the Router, but it isn't far at all. At home my Xbox has to go through many more walls
and is on a different floor from my Router.

I unfortunately can't run the batch file as I'm on a mac OS, which doesn't really recognize the language as far as I can tell.

Thanks for the help though. It is greatly appreciated. I'll update by tomorrow with the new info.

Ran this right after I got kicked from Destiny 2. Unfortunately if you compare this to the previous diagnostic I ran both when I first logged on, it is actually better, not worse. Interestingly, the disconnections have been more sporadic. I logged on soon
after my last post, which was 21 minutes ago as I type this. I have also observed it disconnecting sooner than 30 minutes before.

Not sure how this one helps really. :/

I think if you'd experience the very same behaviour at home, as at your dorm, you would have remembered it.

"Open network" as in null authentication. Meaning, you don't have to verify the identity of the device you connect with a password?

Confirm with the IT staff what type of security measures they've taken, considering it is an "open network". For example, if they've configured any time limit for how long an associated device can be associated to their open SSID. Some devices (for example
your Apple device(s)), and the application(s) in use, along with TCP/IP protocol, may go unnoticed during the reassociation process.

Your NAT type, being the most restrictive form of NAT type, is nowhere optimal, but it shouldn't be the culprit of the continues disconnections every 30 minutes (on the clock).

Client match history, reassociations, or if they are able to debug your client.

I don't think the RF propagation patterns, at your home vs your dorm, are the same. So, one location/different hardware/different RF propagation/different attenuation areas in comparison to another location/... You get the point Xbox One (bought in 2015) disconnects from Live consistently every 30 minutes :)

Haven't been able to get in any good contact with IT, but was searching around and found this thread. Any thoughts?

Disconnecting from Xbox Live at College

This issue has also affected any games I have downloaded through the Microsoft store, occasionally kicking me to the Xbox homescreen and asking if I am the real owner of the game. This has also taken the form of lag while in a singleplayer mode. Naturally
the multiplayer and streaming problems also still exist.

The thing that confuses me is if this is a common problem in college dorms, why hasn't Microsoft set up a support page with simple instructions to clear it up? The symptoms appear to be very specific.
