Xbox One Blu-ray player quirk with "Death Note" anime set

    Dear Support,

I have been asked to create a forum post as it seems Xbox chat support have no way to connect users with Microsoft (Xbox) app developers in order to investigate a potential issue. I am hoping a developer of the Blu-ray player app will see this post and offer
    help.

    The affected product:

This problem affects the "Death Note" Region "B" Blu-ray disc set on my UK region Xbox One (with UK Xbox Live account).

    Producer: Viz Media Production

Distributed by: Manga Entertainment Ltd. - "MangaUK"
    www.mangauk.com

    Code on packet spine: MANB8764A

    The Issue:

If links are permitted on the forum, I have made a video here:

    https://1drv.ms/v/s!AsNlU9fvqb7thAsD_QNSvflqWwQp

Disc 1 contains 7 episodes of the animé series "Death Note", when playing back the first few episodes with the Xbox One, after approximately 12 minutes the screen will dim in the style of inactivity. Of course, nobody wants this during video playback. Even
stranger still, the exact time at which the dimming occurs is different on a per-episode basis. The same issue also occurs on the other discs in the set.

Of note is that the Xbox One controller never switches off at any point during the affected episodes. However, it does switch off during a normal movie playback (which does not exhibit the issue) as does it during later episodes on the disc (which also do
    not dim).

    What I have tried:

    - Factory reset of Xbox One

    - Offline upgrade (reinstall of the OS from a USB flash drive)

    - Wiped persistent cache

    - Reinstalled the Blu-ray player application

Steps I have taken to verify the disc set I own:

    - Played the discs in two different-brand stand-alone Blu-ray players on different TV setups confirming they are entirely normal, with episodes playing out in their entirety with no issues.

Steps I intend to take next:

    - I will try the discs on another Xbox One and verify the same behaviour.

    - I will contact the publisher and/or distributor in order to enquire about this issue.

    Summary:

At this point, I firmly believe the only way to make any progress on this issue is to work with a developer to ascertain the cause of this quirk. Although I have only seen the issue occur with this one disc set so far, I don't think it makes any sense for
a Blu-ray set production to invoke a software power saving / screen burn-in / image retention feature in the middle of playback. Chat support have attempted to progress this issue by offering a console repair, but sending in my console makes very little sense
when the disc set would be needed for verification.

    :)

The Blu-ray player app allows you to enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies available in your region through your Xbox One console.

Note When you insert a disc for the first time, you’ll see a prompt to install the player app. For more information, see Set up and install
the Blu-ray and DVD player app

Xbox One Blu-ray player quirk with "Death Note" anime set

    Update 18th April 2017 17:41 BST

MangaUK have replied to my email and confirmed that they cannot reproduce the issue I am experiencing against standalone Blu-ray players. The only option remaining now is to confirm whether the same issue occurs on another Xbox One unit.

I remain convinced that there is a software fault within the Xbox One Blu-ray player app combined with this specific release.

    Hey there Dafpunk!

Thank you for the extremely detailed and well written post. Once you've been able to test your disc on another Xbox One console, post back with the results from that and we'll take a look at where we're at then.

Keep us updated for sure! Xbox One Blu-ray player quirk with "Death Note" anime set :)

    Update 28th April 2017 18:00 BST

I've now had a chance to test my Blu-ray set in a friends (fully up-to-date at time of writing) Xbox One console, as suspected the screen still dims during playback in exactly the same places as on my Xbox One. Evidence:

    https://1drv.ms/v/s!AsNlU9fvqb7thA2mxacL0B-Ai45-

At this point it is clear that this disc set uncovers an issue with the Blu-ray player which hasn't been considered until now. I strongly suggest that this is not interpreted as a disc problem, as we have seen from my prior posts that stand-alone Blu-ray
players do not exhibit this issue.

A message to support - I think now is the time this issue gets passed on to the player software developers such that the issue can be identified and resolved.

    Thanks

    Hey Dafpunk!

Thanks for the update and the video showing exactly what's happening. We have seen a similar issue in the past with Xbox One S consoles and specific movies. The discs worked correctly on Blu-ray players but not on the consoles. Ultimately, the issue turned
out to be a bad bunch of discs and replacing the disc resolved the issue.

It sounds like MangaUK is receptive to you and is willing to work with you a bit. If that's the case, are you able to ask if they have the ability to test the same series in an Xbox One console and not a Blu-ray player? I'd also recommend asking if they
can exchange your current collection for one from a different printing.

We're trying to eliminate as many possible variables as we can so those two things will help a bunch.

Keep us posted! Xbox One Blu-ray player quirk with "Death Note" anime set :)

Xbox One Blu-ray player quirk with "Death Note" anime set

    Hi Miss Bijoux

Unfortunately MangaUK do not have an Xbox One, perhaps Microsoft UK can assist with a test by loaning a console? I aim to follow up soon with some analysis of the disc contents, given the issue appears to only affect the first few episodes per disc.

I will enquire as to whether there are any alternative pressings - however I'd like to outline my thinking here:

    1) The issue is a screensaver-style dimming similar to that used on the dashboard when an inactivity timer is reached.

    2) The Xbox One Blu-ray player controls this activity timer, being as it's handling the video playback.

    3) Nothing on a Blu-ray would be aware of a given players features in order to have any direct impact upon that dimming feature.

It would be great to hear whether the appropriate developers have been shown this issue to know whether it's being run by the right folks.

    Thanks

    Hey there -

I'm not sure whether Xbox UK would be willing to loan anything to MangaUK, that would be something they would have to work out together. We have no information on their processes and wouldn't want to speak on their behalf.

As far as passing the issue along to any developers - we can't do that until we've exhausted all the troubleshooting steps on our end. That includes trying a new printing of the series if at all possible. Additionally, do you have any other Blu-ray discs
published by MangaUK? If so, do those also experience the same dimming issue?

We have seen no other reports of this issue and are unable to reproduce the issue internally as we do not have a copy of the discs. I understand that what I'm asking is maybe frustrating however I'm not asking any steps that will not be asked by the devs.

Thanks for your patience, understanding, and cooperation. Xbox One Blu-ray player quirk with "Death Note" anime set :)
