Xbox One backwards compatibility

Hello,

I wanted to know if it's possible to make an Xbox One game that is an XB1 disk not a XB360 disk compatible with someone playing on a XB360. I know that there are tons of XB360 games that you are able to install the backward compatible game onto the XB1,
but that's not what I'm asking.

Say there's someone you know that has not upgraded to an Xbox One yet, why I don't know, but they haven't. You'd like to play a game with them that you have already purchased on the Xbox One. Can I play online with them or do I have to go buy the same
game for xbox 360 and use that disk to download the compatibility version?

As long as it's a backwards compatible game, you can play with them. It's the same version of the game. There's not a special version or anything to have it be backwards compatible.

 

There are a small number of games that allow the type of crossplay that you mention. World of Tanks comes to mind, but there are very few.

In 99% of the cases though, you would need to be playing the same console version of the game in order to play together online.

For example, if they are playing the 360 version of Destiny, and you are playing the Xbox One version of Destiny, you cannot play together.

 

Furthermore, this functionality is typically up to the developers to implement. Cross platform of any kind, especially from xbox to xbox, is up to the game developer and their servers (unless you're on a playstation, then it gets sticky).
