Reference Levels and HDMI Color Space Settings

Or put differently, in full range 0 represents the same black as does 16 in limited range, and 235 as bright white in limited range as does 255 in full range.

While full range RGB is the best way to output games from the Xbox 360 in itself, it only works when the display expects full range. Since the Xbox 360 doesn't indicate the quantization range properly over HDMI, the display might need to be forced to treat
    the input as full range.

    .

So the truth is simply that the settings need to be matched between the output device and the display. This worked fairly well until the Xbox team broke it.

Limited is recommended. You get crushed blacks on full RGB Harrissment. Xbox one and full range rgb?)

Yes there is wide debate what to use in these settings Harrissment but there was an official support response explaining why limited is recommended. If I can find it I'll post it for you. Xbox one and full range rgb?)

    Found It!

    'Greetings Folks,

I wanted to post some feedback I've received from the development team that may help clarify this issue.

TV content is authored such that a value of 16 (on a 0-255 scale) represents full black and 235 represents full white (this color span = “RGB Limited”) and assumes the viewer's TV has been calibrated to show full black upon receiving
a pixel value of 16 and to show full white upon receiving a value of 235. Xbox One is assumed to be connected to a TV (not a PC monitor), and we make our best efforts to optimize video content (movies, TV shows, content authored specific experience for video
levels, i.e. "RGB Limited"), consistent with CE devices.

Switching to RGB Full will cause loss of visual dynamic range on a properly calibrated TV.

For reference, you can review the Spears and Munsil links below for a detailed description on calibrating your TV and background on color space.

Basically, you should always use the TV (RGB Limited) Color Space display setting on Xbox One. All video content (TV shows, Movies, Blu-ray, DVD, etc.) is authored for (RGB Limited). You’ll actually lose visual dynamic range if
you select Color Space = PC (RGB Full).

The "RGB Limited" setting could be named more accurately.'

Hope that's of some interest to you Harrisment. Xbox one and full range rgb? :)

  7. I have a Full RGB LG panel, for some reason the XB1 setting still will not work with it. Just crushed blacks which is a pain since everything else that can output full rgb does just fine. I've never been able to get an answer about this with the xb1, still,
    it's early days.

Edit: Read you post above mine, My full rgb capable panel set to full rgb will not work properly with the xb1, maybe the setting is bogus?

  9. You posted the same time, I did, but it doesn't really explain the problem with this. It's words explaining what allot already know. At this point in time, stay limited is the only option for me, so I guess thats right

Yes there's wide debate on it, make of it what you will, but just thought I'd post the official support explanation of why to use 'Limited.'

My tv does support ful range rgb which is why I set it to that but I will try limited when I get home I bet I can see much better in the dark areas of games once I have changed this!

Still do not inderstand why the full range is not working tho as my tv can do it it is not an old tv.

Mine does too, but it's no good on Full RGB so I use the recommended ones.

Hope you have improvements with 'Limited' Harrissment.

You can let us know any differences you find later. Xbox one and full range rgb?)

Xbox one and full range rgb?

Ive been curious why blu ray looks like crap (dull and washed out) regardless of what I set. I have my TV calibrated professionally but it was dialed in using my bluray player under YCbCr. As long as the One uses only the RGB color space blurays will never
look as accurate as it should be. I did however find something out that I notified MS about as I was digging for answers. My receiver tells me the signals it is seeing input and output. I noticed that the xbox One ONLY outputs RGB limited regardless what color
space you choose. If you use PC it is actually compressed into limited and the BTB and WTW is clipped. If your display is set to RGB full you will essentially see 16 shades of the same black. That explains the crushed blacks. Though less noticeable you are
also getting 16 shades of the same white.

Without the option to output straight to YCbCr which to me is preferable since the One is a bluray player, the One is pretty disappointing. I'm leaving it standalone just for games and everything else is going to my receiver. Until MS gets some better display
options added, we may be stuck with calibrating our TVs to RGB limited. Though this will throw off a direct YCbCr signal from a true BD player.

  14. Just saying, after all the updates it's still not working for me. I've gotten used to the crushed blacks because there's no way I'm switching tv settings every time I game.
