Xbox One and External Hard Drive not going to sleep

I installed the June update on my Xbox One last night and connected a new WD External HDD. Everything works great.

However, I have a question about turning the Xbox off. When I turn the console off (standby mode), the HDD never turns off. I sits there and spins. In order to make the HDD to go to sleep, I have to disconnect the HDD USB from the back of the Xbox. Unfortunately,
this means that I have to reconnect the HDD when I turn the Xbox back on.

Is anyone else having this issue?

    :)

Please don't revive threads from 4 years ago a lot has changed on the xbox one system OS so obviously information from 4 years ago is going to be out of date!

This is intended. The HDD will remain available to the console for when it loads up again. Otherwise the Xbox One would have to spin up the HDD which would lead to possible delays depending on the HDD which is against the Instant On idea of everything being
    available straight away.

The other solution rather than unplugging the HDD it to set your console to actually power off rather than sit in Instant On mode.

What part of the HDD being on is the problem for you? Can you hear it spinning? Is it flashing access light etc? I use a My Passport HDD and it runs silent but flashes the access light intermittently to show it is still on.

I don't think that it should work like this. A hard drive takes a few seconds to spin up from sleep. If updates are available and need to be downloaded, there's no reason why the console couldn't just spin the drive up, then do it.

  7. Which drive(s) do you have? MOST vendors have a utility that will configure the firmware on the drive to set the sleep value. Most drives, sleep is disabled.

A dev said in one of the threads in the early access section that MS engineers are thinking of the best way to handle this. Hopefully they'll figure something out.

Another question to this - since the hdd never stops spinning down even if I turn of my Xbox One - is there any danger in having data loss if I just disconnect the drive when Xbox is off? I carefully listened to it while the Xbox was off and I still heared
    those typically disk access sounds...

    Greetings

Set your console to actually power off rather than sit in Instant On mode. This work for me.. it turns everything off, including the external HD

I have confirmed this on mine as well. Switched the power mode setting to Energy Saver so the system actually powers down instead of just going into standby and this helped the external to stop.

I did switch it back though because I still want to update on it's own so I don't have to worry about it. But then my system isn't in the room I sleep in, in which case it would probably drive me nuts.

Mine is set to energy saver and I regrettably have to unplug the external every time or after about five minutes it'll start spinning up QUITE loudly (like louder than when the system is on). I've a Seagate 3tb fyi.

Rest assured that it is being looked into Xbox One and External Hard Drive not going to sleep :)

A few suggestions that may help: Try to see if there is a firmware update for drive. The drive should be turning off, however some drives don't handle the request correctly. I know with my older model seagate harddrive, there was actually no way for it to
switch off, if it was plugged in then it was on and i had to unplug it to switch it off

Also, is it happening everytime? Or just ocassionally? I've read that it could be caused due to background functions running on the xbox, like updates/downloads/etc, in which case it'd need the HD to be on to preform those tasks

  15. I'm also having this issue. HD stays on buzzing and clicking all night for no reason (no updates or downloads).

Very annoying as I have a seagate and they seem to be loud HD's.
