Xbox One and External Hard Drive (HDD) Install Issues

    Hello!

I have been having issues with the Xbox One External Hard Drive.

The Drive I'm using is a WD 2tb usb 3.0 w/ ac power supply. Console is the Day One Edition Xbox One aka the Xbox One.

So, here is my issue. I formatted the Hard Drive and use it as my primary storage for the console. I downloaded a bunch of games to it and everything is fine. After a couple of months I go to install a new game and it says I'm of storage. I go to my games
and apps to see that I have 800mb of 500gb available and im at 99%. Another words it isn't recognizing my external hard drive as a storage unit. I scroll through my games and noticed that games are downloaded to the external HDD are listed and I was even successfully
able to launch a few of them. So I took the following steps to try and resolve the issue:

-Turn off console, wait 2 minutes turn back on

-Turn console off, turn HDD, turn both back on

-Turn both off, unplug both overnight, turn both back on

-Tried all Xbox One USB ports

    -Factory reset Xbox One

After all the above steps didn't resolve the issue I go into Xbox One settings then system and go to the storage option and see the hard drive is there with 1.4tb free and listed as Games and Apps. Still nothing so from here I reformat it and the same thing
still happens. My Xbox One doesn't recognize it as free storage. So, at this point I plug it into my PC reformat it to NTSC plug it back into the Xbox One go to settings>system>manage storage and reformat it again. This time the Xbox One recogizes it as storage
so I spend the night redownloading all the games. PROBLEM SOLVED?

    Nope.

This happens to me randomly ever so often without no rhyme or reason.

It has become extremely frustrating to have to keep having to reformat this thing and redownload 500gb's of data. Any ideas how to resolve this issue Microsoft, Community or Gamers?

    Thanks In Advance

    -Install Amnesia

    :)

Xbox one External Hard Drive Question

Few follow up questions before I suggest you take this up with support.
    1. Are you in the preview program?
    2. Did you get a prompt or any indication to format the harddrive on Xbox?
    3. If you plug the harddrive into the Pc what happens?
    4. If you Format the harddrive into a known windows format fat32 and then install it back on the Xbox what happens?

Sounds like there could be a bad sector on the hard drive or there could be a bug you are experiencing. Suggestion is to cold boot the system, and format your hard drive on your pc. Re install it back on Xbox it should force you to format the harddrive again. Install the game and post results.

Alternative issue there could be some firmware attached to the drive that limits the read which could cause issues when trying to stream content from the drive.

Either way if this does not solve your issue contact xbox support chat.

Xbox One and External Hard Drive (HDD) Install Issues

    Hi there,

if this keeps happening to the external storage device I would start to think that the external storage device might be having some (hardware) issues and could stop working at all any time soon.

I personally would get a different external storage device to see what happens when using that one.

Is there a USB key with hundreds of GB? (or more)

You can use external storage on Xbox one, but it must be an external USB 3.0 hard drive. Flash drives are not supported as a storage device - they only work for video playback. The minimum size of HDD is 256GB, there is no upper limit. You can install
all future games to these hard drives.

    Formatting Hard Drive

The Format Hard Drive function is also there so that you can format external USB 3.0 HDD's with the appropriate Xbox partition for saving games etc. By default, a new external HDD would come with a FAT or NTFS partition which cannot be used for installing
Xbox games. A NTFS partitioned external hard drive can be used however for extended Game DVR clips.

    Issue

are your games installed to the internal drive or are they installed on an external drive, sounding like a hdd issue.
