This has happened to me twice in the past 24 hours, where me and my friends are playing a game and suddenly it just drops me and I can't hear them and they can't hear me. it's super frustrating.

My problem is similar, I have problems with NAT. In my case she is MODERATE and I can not play STATE OF DECAY 2 online. I've opened recommended ports on the router, I've rebooted PC, router, and mold. Please help us because Online Mode is the reason
you bought STATE OF DECAY 2. THANK YOU.

i wasn't able to restart my modem/router, and i tried restarting my network connection but afterwards it still said the same thing

Try to restar your modem/Router and restart your network connection on your pc settings.
