Xbox not allowing surround sound via HDMI in

So I have a bit of a different setup then most. I have a Windows Media Center PC that runs my cable TV, I wanted to plug this into the xbox one so that I could use the 3d bluray drive on the xbox on my new 3d tv. When I do this, my PC will not allow me to
use anything other then stereo sound. I disconnected the PC from the xbox and connected straight to the receiver, where I was able to use all sound options up to 7.1. Now, if my receiver supported 3d passthrough this would be a moot point, unfortunately it
does not, so I am left trying to push my tv through the xbox, and connecting the xbox to the receiver via optical out.

Why wont my PC see the xbox as capable of receiving a surround sound signal? I have gone into the audio settings on TV & One Guide and enabled surround sound. I cannot imagine this is working as intended?

    :)

    Surround sound **** box 360?

I have a sony DAV-DZ170 surround sound system, a vizio E3D420VX 3d tv, and my xbox 360 now my tv is smart and has music, you tube and such and connects to the surround sound via Digital Audio Out. and my xbox is connected via HDMI. so its xbox>hdmi>tv>toslink>surround
    sound.

will my current setup give me surround sound for games?

or do i have to plug surround sound into xbox?

    Can't Watch SD

Currently, the xbox one does not support digital surround sound via HDMI pass through. I believe they are working on a fix for this.

If you need surround sound, you could perhaps use a S/PDIF digital optical cable from the xbox to your surround capable receiver

TV audio settings are set for surround sound. That is the only option in the TV & One Guide Audio tab. There is no other option to be more specific. As for my display and sound settings, those I have tried 5.1 uncompressed, and bitstream DD5.1 as my intel
integrated audio supports up to 7.1. I tested this by connecting directly to my receiver and sure enough it goes up to 8 channels (7.1).

  6. there are two different settings.

One is under TV & One Guide

The other is under Display and Sound

If your PC supports it, then its just xbox settings to adjust....

hdmi audio needs to be set to 7.1

If audio is going into a receiver via hdmi out from the xbox one

If its audio out via S/pdif then your Optical audio should be bitstream, dts or whatever makes sense for your equipment

    make sense?

Ok, as I said in the previous post, I have changed the setting under TV & Guide to surround. The settings under display and sound are set to HDMI bitstream DD5.1, and optical is set to bitstream DD5.1. Now I have tried shifting the HDMI to 5.1 uncompressed.
I have no tried anything with 7.1 as I have a 5.1 system.

I have been over those links.

Looks like you had the same issue. It all seems to stem from the xbox one not reporting back to the PC that it is capable of receiving anything other then stereo sound. I am not sure where the problem is, seeing as how in windows, the playback device is
labeled "xbox one" though it shows a TV beside is, which makes me think perhaps the xbox is letting the TV EIDE response dictate the audio mode.

I guess the last thing for me to try is to run the xbox straight to the receiver and the PC into the xbox. If it allows full sound that way then the issue is the xbox letting the TV tell the PC what audio modes.

All this would be moot if I had a receiver that could do 3d HDMI, but I had hoped that buying another several hundred dollar receiver would not be needed to do this. I also liked the idea of being able to command my TV with voice commands and have everything
through one interface. I will reroute things one more time this afternoon and let you know how it goes.

Thanks for trying, I do appreciate your responses.

  10. The Xbox One is designed to work with specific hardware.

It's not designed to allow any and all HDMI devices as the xbox one is not decoding all signal types to the extent that your stereo will.

It's a trial and error, so now that you know its set up correctly, this means that the decoding required from the signal the PC sends is not compatible with the Xbox One.

Do you by chance have an Nvidia GEforce video card, if so look here: www.geforce.com/.../features

That actually makes no sense. An uncompressed 5.1 audio signal is a 5.1 uncompressed audio signal. There are not different formats to that. That also applies to Dolby Digital, it is a standard audio signal, so if the xbox can decode or passthrough DD from
a cable box, it can do the same for any DD enabled device. If that is not the case, it is an arbitrary block that has no business being there.

I changed the setup last night, running PC -> Xbox One -> Receiver -> TV. Keeping it all on HDMI actually seems to have worked. The PC is now sending a DD signal via HDMI that the xbox then passes to the receiver. For some reason though, when the HDMI skips
the receiver and the optical is used on the xbox to run audio to the receiver it does not pass the DD signal off to the optical. The diagrams in the setup instructions you linked show a situation almost identical to mine, but for me it doesn't work. My PC
is using the integrated Intel HD4000 on the Ivy Bridge i3 chip I have in there.

Basically I seem to be down to it working as intended if I keep everything in the HDMI link, but I cannot use the optical. This sucks because the reason I had not had the PC hooked straight to the receiver is that when the receiver is turned off, the screen
resolution gets messed up and I have to manually fix it. Whereas the PC HDMI straight to the TV with optical to the receiver keeps that from happening. I may be able to fix that with a powered HDMI splitter, but it just seems like an extra expense that shouldn't
need to exist. It would also be nice if the xbox interfaced with Windows Media Center a LOT better then it does.

  12. This makes perfect sense.

HDMI to HDMI is not the same as HDMI to optical

its why HDMI cables and HDMI recievers were created with complex DaC's that also support optical, coax, etc.

This is appearing more and more to just be too much of a mess to be viable. I wonder if the issue is more to do with artificial limitations from DD then anything else. I see absolutely no reason that if my PC outputs a compressed DD signal over HDMI that
the xbox cannot then send that same compressed DD signal over optical. It is the same data stream regardless of the connector.

The reddit link is broken, but the second link is actually helpful. Some people trying to do exactly what I am. Doesn't seem like they are having tons of luck themselves. Im going to fiddle with this a little bit more, but I don't know that I am going to
spend much more effort on this. Much like the issues I have had trying in import a DD signal into my PC, it doesn't seem to want to work for no good reason. (You used to be able to import DD into a PC over optical, but DD decided they didn't want people doing
that anymore and strong armed the hardware makers into pulling the functionality.)
