    Hello there folks!

Just bought a Xbox One last week and I've been loving the console...except for one minor issue. First of all, I can hear a definate clicking sound that appears to be the HDD read/writing data. Is it normal that I can hear it? Second of all, the fan produces
a fairly faint whirling sound kinda like in this video:

I know A LOT of people have pointed out that their X1s aren't as silent as others. You folks at support must've read/heard stuff like this a million times. What I'm asking is if the two noise factors I mentioned above can be a sign of function related hardware
issues (i.e. something that impacts console performance). If it's just noise then I don't mind. Thank you in advance for your answers and sorry for making yet another noise thread.

    :)

, the noise however when you twist the bottom part can be caused because your twisting it, or you may have a break in the wire.

Outside of the disc drive, there's 3 main sources of noise: -

The fan. I think that's what's causing that ticking sound in your case. It sounds like a fan that's slightly out of alignment.

The hard drive, as it's a regular mechanical HDD. Obviously that's perfectly normal as long as it's not making a loud clicking sound, as that's usually a sign of impending doom, lol.

Coil whine/capacitor squeal. Some electronic components can cause unwanted noise under certain circumstances. The noise can take various forms, but it's most commonly either a high pitched squeal (reasonably common with PC graphics cards) or a sound that's
a bit like an old fashioned printer or small ball bearings rattling around in a tin can. Coil whine can sometimes be mistaken for the noise of a hard drive working.

Here's a particularly clear example of a recording of an Xbox One that has coil whine issues: -

MS have said that they will replace any consoles affected by coil whine. I have also had a console replaced because the fan made the same ticking sound as yours. Obviously, from a video it's hard to tell how loud it is, but if it bothers you I would swap
it out with the retailer. If that's not possible, contact Xbox Support and ask for an advanced exchange, although they may only offer a repair. As long as your console is connected to Xbox Live, all of your game saves are backed up to the cloud, so you won't
lose your progress in games if you do decide to go for a replacement/repair.

As for whether the issues will affect console performance, the answer is almost certainly no. The fan noise may get marginally worse over a lengthy period of time, but it may not. These things are hard to predict.

    Hope that helps!

  5. Thanks for the reply Sigma!

I've been wondering if the clicking sound I've been hearing is coil whine but I doubt it. The HDD-like sound I'm hearing is most frequent during boot up and shut down which are the times a HDD would be most active read/writing data. During the console operation,
the sound is less frequent but is still present. Also from what I've gathered, coil whine dissapears during gameplay but the sound I'm describing is still there while I play. As for the noise levels of the clicking sound, it is slightly louder then the fan.
Once again, thanks for the reply!
