Xbox Live vs Xbox Gold

Hi There,

I've had an Xbox Live account for years, no problem. I recently pre-ordered COD Cold War from Amazon and when it was released I got the redeem code. No problem. Downloaded to my Xbox One and happily played in single campaign mode through Christmas. Took
a two week break. Tried to return to the game last week but to no avail. It loads okay, then I get to Press A to start and it goes to a screen that asks me to go select Gold or Game Pass, I say no thanks, it goes back to the Press A screen to start the game,
then back to pick Gold or Game Pass, I click no thanks, it goes back to Select A........ you can see where this is going. I cant no access my digital game without paying for either Live Gold or Game Pass. What happened?I uninstalled, reinstalled, cleared memory,
reset, etc etc, same situation. All the dude from Microsoft could do was say, " you have to pay for one game pass is cheaper". When did this happen? I can buy a stand alone digital version (Amazon doesnt say you need a Live Gold status) but cant play it without
a Game Pass or Live Gold? Did I miss that pretty important roll out or am I doing something wrong? Thanks in advance.
