Xbox LIVE vs. Comcast - how do I fix the random ping spikes?

So I recently had to switch to Comcast HSI because of money issues, and for download and upload speed, Comcast is really nice, but when it comes to playing online the ping is just absolutely horrible, and I have been unsuccessful as to finding how to truly
fix my issue. Description of what happens: when I play online (ex: CoD Ghosts) I just skip all over the map and it makes me extremely frustrated, and I do not enjoy the lag one bit. I can't imagine anyone who would. My question is, is: how do I fix these random
ping/lag spikes? Don't be all techy techy with me because I don't really know much about networking and all that mumbo jumbo. So please keep the answer as simple as possible.

    :)

  2. Why is the lag getting worse in this game?

same been a bit laggy lately, and randomly switches my server host. switched internet providers though from Verizon to Comcast so maybe that's why.

but am still confused on why the north central us has a lower ping then my area which is east us. 37 vs 52 ping. what?

    Hi there Pittzo!

I don't mean to bombard you with questions, but this will help me out in figuring what the root cause may be. Is your Xbox connected wirelessly or wired? Also, does it run through a router? Would you be able to provide the model names of your router and
or modem? Does this happen with all games or only a few? When did this problem start happening? Has it ever worked properly from this network/console before?

Xbox is connected wirelessly (can't connect with an Ethernet).

I have the Xfinity router, so I guess yes to your second question?

It says the router name is : ARRIS and then under that it says TG862

This lag happens on all games I have so far, the lag differs from game to game though, Ghosts being the worst of them all.

It started happening when I switched to Comcast.

And so far no, the internet network and console aren't working together I guess you could say.

I know this Comcast ping spike is a known issue for a lot of Comcast users, so I know it's not just me who experiences this issue of ping spiking with Comcast.

This answer may be a tad on the technical side. I recommend setting up port forwarding on your router. You may need to contact Comcast and have them walk you through how to do this, there is also a list of 3rd party instructions within a link I'm about to
provide you. You can find more information on portforwarding and the ports you need to forward for Xbox Live at this link

    Greetings Pittzo!

The Arris TG862G (xfinity) is a notorious device, for the relationship with the connectivity to Xbox LIVE, especially when the console is connected to a network via WiFi (wireless).

    Please read:
    Known issues

You could exhaust yourself from troubleshooting, to no avail, or consider a different set up that actually works and works well.

The Arris TG862G (xfinity) can be configured to be operating in bridge mode. In bridge mode, the TG862G will act as a standard modem without the router/NAT functionality. You can then connect your own choice of router to the TG862G and you don't have to exhaust
    yourself from troubleshooting doing so.

To bridge the TG862G you'll have to contact Comcast and ask them to configure this device to be operating in bridge mode, for the purpose of having an additional router/NAT, connecting to this device.

    You'll have the
    The Networking Hardware Information forums
to your disposal, to search for a range of different make and models of router's, that are well-behaved and proven to support connectivity for Xbox LIVE.
Note! Keep an eye open for the trending topic 'Known issues', that you'll see under the information for each of the listed devices/router's.

D-Link router's are both affordable and well-behaved. Maybe something you would consider take a closer look at.

Post back and let us know how that goes.

    Good luck!

  9. I believe there is no fix to this just comcast fixing their network. I have had two different modems from them, tried 3 different routers, have replaced my cat5e cable with a cat6 cable, bought a gaming monitor and I'm just lagging all the time.
