    Microsoft should consider doing some major revamping and quality testing of the Xbox live service. At launch in 2002-2003, all that was needed was a 5 Mbps download speed, and
    an approved Xbox Live router (or just any decent router). Today for gaming, 100 Mbps is "advised" yet it only results in intermittent gameplay on a regular basis. This is at times even
    worse than the 3rd party options for Xbox online gaming. The multimedia features of the new consoles are very nice, but the system core feature is as a gaming machine that is supposed to have multiplayer online capabilities.

    I understand the official requirements are 3 Mbps download and 0.5Mbps upload with a less than
    150 millisecond ping, but when you speak with customer support - the numbers change dramatically - I was told that 200 Mbps would be better for gaming (which I did not agree with). Ping rate was
    changed to less than 50 milliseconds. And yes my NAT is open.

    They reposted well known information, and I already had acknowledged that information to start with. It was an attempt to increase contribution without actually being constructive.

    Microsoft recommends a minimum download speed of 3 megabits per second for online gaming, 1 megabit per second for SD video streaming, and 3.5 megabits per second for HD video streaming. Minimum upload speed for online gaming should be faster
    than 0.5 megabits per second. Streaming does not utilize upload speeds. The ping should be less than 150 milliseconds for anything done on the Internet. The lower the ping number, the more effective the connection is.

    Games have also improved a lot since back then too, there is also more internet traffic now than then, and 100GBps would be better than 100mps (as an extreme example).

    Personally I think I have more issues with my internet just straight up cutting out entirely, than with Xbox Live not working, or having service outages, and the actual game servers combined.
    I agree with the traffic aspect but I would expect there to more servers and even physically located nearer players - regional centers.

    My internet typically only cuts out are preset times but I agree with you that there are folks who have more issues than they did in years past.

    I think you are being very arrogant in assuming it is my connection. The network goes down almost every other day. I do not have issues with game updates and can download updates at speeds over 100+ Mb/s. I also have no interest in playing many games -
    in fact I would happily only play two games are year that are approved by Microsoft for online gaming.

    I have a 200Mb/s connection with a 20-30ms ping using the Xbox software test.

    It's not always on MS side that connections are bad.

    It can be things like bad connection on your own side, or server side issues at the game servers (not Xbox live, but actual game servers).

    And yes.. sometimes the Xbox Live servers may have issues as well.

    Don't forget that online activity made a huge jump since 2002/2003 and will continue to do so over the coming years.

    More activity means the need of a better connection and more serverside capacity.
