Xbox Live service discontinued for Xbox 360 by 2016?

Well a Xbox 360 preview program has just been announced. It could be Xbox live for Xbox 360 is still possibly going to be active for a good while longer. Improving network functionality seems to blow the whole it will end in 2016 rumor outta the water for
me. The new update seems to be a future proofing thing.

 

MS has said they will be supporting the 360 well into the future. There's no reason to shut it down because it still makes money. Sony did this with the PS2. It was available forever had a bunch of cheap games and it kept people on the brand. Mostly
people like to keep the "oh M$ is gonna pull the rug out from under you" sentiment going but historically companies sell their product as long as people will buy it. Every year millions of kids turn the age where their parents buy them a video game system
and having an inexpensive alternative to your brand in the market is a good thing. 360 will be here as long as people buy it. A scheduled update and preview program will breathe life into it and extend its life even further.

 

I don't think they will shut it down until the majority start shifting over to the One....if that happens. 11 million on the One and 69 million are presumably still on their 360, have either given up gaming or switched to the Ps4. That's still an enormous
number of people that haven't bought a One. How does MS get this massive population of gamers to head to the One? I can only answer for myself. I guess if Fallout 4 was a One exclusive, I would go ahead and get it. Otherwise, nah.

 

That's a good point if it does keep live longer than 2016 that be great. Even though it would be harder to get a profit by using the same old stuff.

 

That older technology also becomes very cheap to produce. I can only point to the PS 2 and how Sony kept that alive as long as people would buy it. It's worked in the past.

 

Either way it is great news for all and a bright future for the 360

 

Well, there is a lot of Xbox One exclusives (which I'm interested to know the storyline), like Quantum Break and Evolve. But money is one of the most sacred object a gamer has to loose, especially for students like me. Creating these consoles also creates
peer pressure. Forcing a person to buy it, even if he/she knows that it will cost A LOT OF MONEY. So, yeah, the Xbox One.

Might buy it. Might not.

 

Microsoft has never said they are cutting 360 access to Live....ever.

Right now, they have more than 46 million Live gold subscribers. Let's say all those people pay for Gold with 40 dollar special promo cards. They've only sold about 12 million ones, so that's at least 34 million 360-only Live accounts.

That's 1.3 Billion dollars a year. Use your heads. They're not walking away from that kind of money. Since One and 360 are accessing the same servers, it costs them very little to keep access for the 360 available. That's *just* the Gold subscriptions,
before movie rental and game sales and their cut of DLC ect.

They're not going to invest in new UI and firmware updates ect. That's what they mean by "dropping support in 2016". They're not saying they no longer want to sell you movies and games.

They're not going to cut 360 access to "try to make you buy a One" either. They're aware that the PS4 is out there.

I'd be shocked if the 360 lost Live access before 2020. I would not be surprised if they maintained access until 2025, to be honest with you. As long as they have even a million 360 only Gold subscribers, it's worth it. There's no more development cost
needed, just bandwidth to pay for and servers to maintain.

The important thing about the original Xbox isn't that they maintained on-line services for five years, it's that they maintained on-line services until they had less than 200,000 Xbox only (non 360) paying accounts.

If people are buying subs, they'll keep the service running.

 

They should of put at least let u play on ur call of duty if u bought it on xb1 online that would be smart and why is the xbox one have a bad view with the dashboard it's confusing and u can't see if u have gold or your tenure if they fix theses profile
viewing problems then I'll go on xb1 but I'm waiting for bo3 to come out n gta6

 

I think xbl on 360 will carry on for many more years to come as long as people still use it everyday for many more years to come

 

MS is pushing via the 360 homepage today, 4/20/2015 a $125.00 trade in through Gamestop towards the purchase of an Xbox One.

125 bucks for a 250 - 500 GB Xbox 360? Heck, I would gladly pay that for a 500 GB 360 myself.

I never would have imagined Microsoft advertising for Gamestop on the 360 homepage? Thus I think M is getting desperate to increase X1 sales and will do anything, including dropping online services for the 360 in order to help boost sales of the X1.

OP: You gave the impression that the X1 can handle 4K resolution? Care to post an official link? Lazy link if ya don¨t mind.

 

2 years old but whether the case is still ongoing, or settled. It does give some insight as to what may happen to the 360. And if it can happen to the 360, then it can also happen to the Wi-Fi ready, etc Xbox One as well.

 

I think it'll last at least until 2018-2026.

 

The Xbox 360 servers are not shutting down anytime soon. The Xbox 360 is coming up on the 10 year anniversary mark. Very few systems have lasted that long. And the latest quarterly revenue has shown exactly why they will be staying up for
long time

 

I really hope they keep up the Xbox 360 Live because I am NOT buying a new console just to play online games. I'd rather cancel my Xbox Live subscription, and switch to my PC to play online multiplayer games.

At least on the computer it's more or less guaranteed that you'll always have online multiplayer while this move by Microsoft gives the impression that once a new console comes out they'll pull the same move just so we'll buy that new console.
