Xbox Live redemption code

So i'm pretty pissed, my Xbox is telling me my Live payment is overdue, I have a redemption code I can use (thought I could use but money grabbing c*nts etc.) so now I'm concerned, if I pay for the year now does that mean I can add the redemption code to
automatically give me an extra year or will it continue to take money from my bank meaning I have to sell this code to a friend?

You can still add the prepaid card to your account, just make sure you turn off auto-renewal so it doesn't automatically renew after both years are up.

I do not have the redemption code as that after I downloaded I played it for a week until xbox live was redeemed.
