Xbox Live Networking Service causes VPN issues

Hi all,

I recently signed up for Xbox Ultimate Pass and installed Xbox (Beta) app on my PC. Since then, I have been unable to connect to my work VPN.

I found if I stop Xbox Live Networking Service (XboxNetApiSvc), it resolves the problem. If I start the service again, the VPN disconnects.

My current solution has been disabling the service when needing to use the VPN and starting it when I want to use the Xbox (beta) app.

I'm connecting to it using Settings > Network and Internet > VPN. My Windows 10 Pro version is 10.0.18363 Build 18363.

Is this a known issue?

My suggestion would be to take the Network Priorities off Automatic and set them manually with your VPN on a higher priority than the Pseudo adaptor for Xbox Live (if it exists)

My suggestion is based VPN issues I see from staff working from home and the issue is that the traffic meant for the VPN is going down the wrong network path and dying rather than failing.

Hello Paul,

Xbox App is using multicast to connect to the Xbox servers, and usually it cannot be forwarded over a VPN.

Unfortunately I've had the exact same experience with Xbox Game Pass for PC and the Xbox (Beta) app.

From what I can gather, the XBox app uses Terado IPSec for chat and multiplayer features. Many ISPs only support one IPSec connection at a time, and my guess is when the XBox app grabs the connection, my work VPN is
out of luck.

Up to now, my workaround has been, like you, to shut down the Live Networking service, but it really is just a workaround.

A fix for this, even if its just disabling Terado when another IPSec connection is attempted, is really needed.

Ok, it seems I narrowed it down to the Windows service "Xbox Live Networking Service".

When it's running, VPN is not working. If I stop it, VPN is working again. Unfortunately, XBOX Gamepass Beta app will restart it, when ever it need it.
