Xbox live gold

I was sent an email that stated I could convert 5 remaining months of xbox live gold into 5 months of game pass ultimate for $1. But, when I converted I was only given 3 months, so I decided that I would rather keep the 5 months of gold instead of
only 3 months ultimate, so I canceled the conversion. When I did so however, I was given a refund of $1 and no Xbox live gold back. So now, I paid nothing to have my xbox live subscription cancelled, which is ridiculous because the email I received was false
and now I'm without an Xbox live subscription. I just want my 5 months back.

My two questions are:

Why did my refund request get rejected?

And why is Microsoft sending out emails that either intentionally mislead people or at the very least don't work?

I clicked the link IN the email, and followed the subscription purchase from there but wasn't given 5 months. I can still go and get the 3 months for a $1 deal, but I'd rather either have the 5 months ultimate I was promised, or just my regular 5 months
of Gold. I shouldn't have to pay to get back the subscription I already paid for.
