Xbox Live Gold works for Adult but not for child on same device

I signed up for Gold so my son can play PvZ in multiplayer, but his gamertag isn't letting him do it, so he's having to use mine. Is there something I have set wrong that the Gold is not coming through on his gamertag?

Yep, same console. I found the issue. It's in the Privacy and online safety section of the settings. There's a prompt that specifies whether he can play multiplayer online. All fixed. Thank you to everyone who made suggestions. Ultimately and indirectly,
you helped me get there (by getting me to further explore settings).

Still not working. The error is:

Your profile does not have the correct permissions to access Xbox Live functionality.

I have tried with content set to age 10 and 11.

Make sure you have the console set as your Home console. https://support.xbox.com/en-US/games/game-setup/my-home-xbox

PvZ is rated E so your son should be able to play it if his age is above 10. EA games that are M rated don't allow child accounts to play them but that shouldn't apply in this case.

Thank you. I'll check it when I get home. This should not be a problem as its the ONLY Xbox I've ever signed into, but I'll check.
