    You cannot use your Microsoft Account balance to purchase Xbox LIVE Gold. That balance can only be used on Xbox LIVE Game store transactions.

    Xbox Live Gold memberships cannot be purchased with Microsoft Account balance, but with a credit card on file instead. Microsoft Account balance can be used on purchases within the Xbox Store.
