Xbox Live Gold membership

We have recently got an Xbox One. Never had an Xbox before. I am curious how Xbox Live Gold works. I see that you can buy 12 month membership. If I buy one, is it only me (under my sign in) that can use it or can my son use it too, with his sign in?
Or do you get a separate Xbox Live account that anyone in the family can use from the one Xbox One?? My son will have his own games that he will want to use Live for.

On the One you can share a gold subscription with everyone on your console. If you were to purchase the subscription under your account, you would need to set the console as your Home console in order for the other profiles to be able to access gold.

 

How do I set the console a the Home console? Is that something I do after I purchase the Xbox Live Gold subscription?

Great. Thanks for all your help. I looked up Xbox Live Gold subscriptions. On the Xbox site I see I can get it for $79.95. However, when I googled Live, I got other options to purchase the 12 math subscription, one site, MMOGA, says $46.91 AUD. Does
that sound right or is there a catch to that?? Do you know?

 

That sounds right. You can usually purchase prepaid cards much cheaper than purchasing gold directly from Xbox. Also, if you do purchase gold from Live, you turn on auto-renewal so they keep your card on file and will automatically renew the subscription
after 12 months unless you remember to turn it off first. Prepaid cards don't do that so they're easier to deal with.

 

Okay, so there is no disadvantage to purchasing a prepaid card? It is the same Xbox Live Gold subscription. And if that's the case, there is no reason not to get a prepaid card?? Just want to be sure. Thanks again.

I use prepaid cards as well. During Christmas and sometimes during August, you can generally score a cheap one year subscription.
