Xbox Live Gold Malfunction

About a month and a half ago I tried to download the free game of the month, when I tried the Xbox notified me that my subscription has ran out of time. I was very confused since I buy a yearly subscription in the middle of November. I decided to load up
three multiplayer games; Fortnite, Rainbow Six Seige, and Battlefield 1. They all worked fine and I was able to join games and play. This leads me to ask two questions:

1. Has Microsoft made online play free

2. If they didn't then why can't I access the free game of the month and sales (such as the blackfriday sale)

I had recently been in contact with Xbox about an account malfunction. I have had troubles with my account on April 25th. This just so happened to be the end of the offer for farm simulator 15 on a discount. I was trying to get online so I could buy the
game but I couldn't get signed in. It made me create a new account in which it doesn't show I have an Xbox live subscription. this was very frustrating since this was a wonderful deal. I am an Xbox live gold member and this discount for that specific game
was one of the bonuses for being a gold member. I am still trying to get this game for the discounted price due to my account malfunctions.

My Xbox isn't even hooked up right now, sadly. I'm have TV malfunctions. Thanks though.
That's pretty neat though. I had heard something about a free game a while back but didn't realize it was monthly.

To answer the first question - no. To play any online multiplayer game (paid, or not), a Live subscription is required.

As for your second question - were you trying to 'purchase' Xbox 360 games or Xbox One games? The 360 games will require a credit/debit card/PayPal on file otherwise the 'purchase' will have to be done on a 360 console.

Did you try making the purchase through a different location - browser, console, Xbox app?

 

No, same location as always-my Xbox one- it's just kinda strange in my opinion that even after constant attempts I can't 'buy' the free gold game for the Xbox 1. This is accompanied by the fact that the Xbox is trying to sell me gold (even though I can
play multiplayer)

 

Do you share the console with anyone else that may have the console set as their Home? You would be allowed to play online in that case, but if you don't have an active subscription on your account, you cannot take part in the gold deals.

 

I don't believe so, but I'll check with the one person this could apply to.

 

Just for get sure, go to Microsoft Subscriptions and see if xbox live appears as active?

If your subscription is set up alright after you to go your Microsoft Subscriptions as previously posted, then I would try perhaps removing your profile and redownloading it refreshed from Xbox Live following the steps outlined here on
