There's no refund for inappropriate behavior such and buying an offensive gamertag. It's no scam. It's the result of making poor choices.

Forced Gamertag Changes
When a forced Gamertag change is imposed, the system automatically assigns a new Gamertag to the affected account, much in the same way a system-generated Gamertag is provided when you first sign up for Xbox Live.

If a player is unhappy with the assigned Gamertag and wishes to change it,
he or she may purchase a new Gamertag through the standard Gamertag change process. However, the Gamertag that received the forced change will remain unobtainable.

A forced Gamertag change may be issued if a Gamertag visually resembles, sound likes, represents, hints at, abbreviates, or otherwise insinuates any of the following:

• Profane words or phrases
• Topics or content of a sexual nature
• Hate speech
• Controversial religious topics
• Notorious people or organizations
• Sensitive current or historical events

I have been hit by the sane thing. I agree its s scam. Microsoft should be ashamed. Force change tag n make customers pay. Its a scam n microsoft has pissed me off for the last time. just by principles im buying playstation next.

Gamertag violation. Its an excuse to steal $ from gamers.

Im canceling xbox gold n going the playstation way.

Customer retention is based on customer service and logic, not hiding behind small print agreement forms that nobody reads.

Microsof has been running this gsmertag scam **** fif ond reason. Stealing $ from customers because they can.

How to change your Xbox gamertag

You can easily change your Xbox gamertag. If your gamertag was created for you when you initially signed up for Xbox (meaning you did not choose it yourself), you can change it one time for free. Additional Xbox gamertag changes cost extra.

If you created your own gamertag at signup and want to change it, you will be charged (fee varies by region and currency).

Note Microsoft can at any time deem a gamertag harmful or inappropriate (even if the Change gamertag tool allows it to be created), and we can change that gamertag without warning. For more info on why we remove gamertags, see

Gamertags are used on other services,not just xbox live,so you have no way of knowing whether a gamertag is being used or not.Just because a gamertag has 0 gamerscore does not mean it isn't being used somewhere else on the system.

As from August 2019,if a gamertag/profile doesn't sign in to any Microsoft service for 2 years then it may be freed up so the earliest any unused gamertags will become available is August 2021

they changed it again, its 2 years for microsoft account, gamertag is 5 years again.

You shouldn't drop to 0 though.I was about 5% away from 4 stars but now i'm still at 3 stars but at 0%

They are only meant to reset it once a year in January as far as I know,unless it's changed again & as usual they haven't bothered telling us.
