Xbox Live Gamertag Availability

Howdy all, I'm having a bit of trouble changing my gamertag and I'm wondering if anyone can help me. I'm trying to change my gamertag to the name of an obscure character from a game that I play often. The gamertag doesn't seem to be taken and is not offensive
in anyway. Yet I cannot change my name to it. I'm trying to figure out if there is a solution for my dilemma. Thank you in advance to anyone who can help

If it says the tag is not available then it's not available.

Gamertags are used on other services,not just xbox live.

interested, you should check back regularly as we are reviving Gamertags daily.

Sign into Xbox LIVE and go to the My Xbox channel, then select Change Gamertag. From here you can either choose from the random name generator, or you can enter a specific Gamertag to see if it’s available.

Not quite but once a gamertag is assigned to a Microsoft account, it stays with that account for as long as the person who owns it, signs in and uses other Microsoft services. You can not separate a gamertag from an active account.
