Xbox live Functionality

Hi, I'm trying to play Need for speed Most Wanted online with my friends but after I sign into my xbox live account and I start the game up it says Sorry your gamer profile does not have the correct permissions to access the Xbox live Functionality? What
does that mean and how can I fix this problem??

My fiance just recently flew back to New Zealand and she purchased a Xbox live gold membership for me as a gift but when I went to redeem the code it wouldn't let me. Told me I needed to contact the seller to get the code for this region? What does that
mean? I sent an email to get the code. Did I do the right thing?
