So in 2020 and when the new console is about to come out, is there still an xbox live must when playing free to play games?

At the moment yes you still need to buy it. If the rumours are right then it could soon be free.

But until that day you still need to buy xbox live if the games are wanting to play are fully online

They've already confirmed that xbox live gold is not going away for the foreseeable future.

it is a setting that you can change yourself it is free to rename yourself locally but it must be registered on xbox live servers

but as with every single service available online including freetoplay services

renaming yourself is not free

on free services this is not an option as you just create another free account

A subscription to Xbox Live Gold is required for all online multiplayer.

Without it you can play offline game modes but some games are online only, as Fortnite is.

You will need to buy a subscription to Xbox Live Gold to play online on Fortnite.
