xbox live discontinued gamer tag account

I would like to know when a account holder permanently stops using a gamer tag and that account and email address that has been canceled with that email service provider to never be used again, they still keep that gamer tag in a friends list and do not
remove it from their system?

So, how many of you are 10 year Xbox Live gamers?

I started with the xboxlive beta with the headset and MotoGP disk, but I currently have a new different gamer tag due to my associated Hotmail account going inactive, due to not logging into email, and thus preventing me from renewing the live account. I had to create a new account while I went through the steps of recovery for the Hotmail address. Once recovered, I simply stayed with my new gamer tag... Now associated with the old Hotmail account. :-(

GamerTags can go into hiatus or dormant status for years for account recovery and/or be recirculated at Microsoft discretion.

Yeah...years ago MS said they were freeing up gts from the old Xbox era. But none since.

They did make unused tags from the original xbox available but some people snapped a lot of them up to sell on so Microsoft haven't done it since.

Also, i cant delete the gamer tag that is on THIS email adress if that makes a difference. Ideally id just delete this xbox live gamer tag and then change the email from my real account to this email. but I also cant find a way to delete a gamer tag/xbox
live account

I am not sure how it happened. I already had a Microsoft account. When I got my xbox I created an account and got a gamer tag while setting up my xbox. I signed up for xbox live from my xbox using my existing gamer tag and Microsoft account. I then went
to xbox live and signed in using my Miicrosoft account, and for some reason when I did this a new gamer tag was created and associate to my Microsoft account. So, now when I log into xbox live I see one gamer tag. But on my xbox I have a different gamer
tag.
