Xbox Legacy vs New Gamertag

Hello all,

If I create a new Xbox account, will my gamertag get a randomly-generated 4-digit string of numbers after a hashtag next to it, similar to Discord? Also, is there such thing as a legacy gamertag where there isn’t a string of numbers after a hashtag at the
end?

If you create a new account and are given a randomly generated tag, it most likely will not have the suffix since it would be a tag that's not already in use.

It's not really called a legacy tag, but anyone who had their tag prior to the new policy would not have the suffix. Any gamertag you create that is not already in use on the servers would also not have the suffix.

Because it's there for legacy compatibility with games that will break with the new format. All changes to gamertags now use the same system that includes the numbers.

You're not understanding his question. It's not a question of a gamertag being in use, it's the fact that you are unable to change the legacy gamertag without first changing your new gt that can be whatever you choose. Only then can you hit customize on the legacy tag, which is still the primary tag in games. In his case he has the tag he wants therefore he isn't able to change the tag progressing him to the needed screen to customize the legacy tag. The problem is Microsoft added a "new" gt system without removing the previous then screw it up further by only allowing one to be customized.

Not all games support the new Gamertag format.

Most games started supporting the new format in 2020. It may take a few years to migrate all new games over to the new gamertag format, and some games (particularly titles that came out prior to or around the change) may continue to use the older gamertag system, so you may notice your gamertag appearing different while playing those specific titles.

When you go to the official website Choose your new gamertag does it say this is your first change and therefore will be free? Because someone else has the original name to "Dirtybit" your GT has the suffix at the end.

If the site offers a free change, you can use that to change your Legacy GT to your Modern GT (However, the suffix will be more prominent in the legacy view).
