Xbox is making noises, getting hot and smells

With consoles that old it is possible that it has a lot of dust built up inside which could possibly explain the burning smell. I am not too sure on the grinding sound, though. Definitely something worth getting looked at. Hopefully it just needs to be
properly cleaned out inside. I would recommend getting it looked at before using it again to avoid causing any further damage to the console or, very worst case scenario, starting a fire.

I would personally recommend taking it in to a local repair shop and have them take a look, or just upgrade to an Xbox One X if money isn't too much of an issue.

4 years is a pretty decent run for a console's life span, assuming you play as much as I do, haha. I wouldn't get too upset about it, at least it's not like the Red Ring of Death from the 360 days. I know people who went through several consoles due to the
RRoD, so getting an opportunity to upgrade to a newer console by relative choice is something I'd definitely appreciate in comparison.

I would immediately power off the console and unplug the power cord and power supply unit if you can smell something burning. This is certainly not normal along with the grinding noise. If there is no disk in the drive, then maybe the cooling fan is failing.

Unfortunately, Microsoft Device Support no longer accepts the original Xbox One console as they have been discontinued. I wouldn't recommend using that console anymore due to the burning smell since there could be risk of shock or fire from a failing piece
of hardware while plugged into an electrical outlet. My recommendation would be to look into getting a new Xbox.

Chances are, if it smells like wires burning and a grinding noise, it will most likely be the fan. I have had this happen with PC's and Xbox. Hopefully the best and cheapest way to fix this is by having a local repair shop replace the fan. If this is not
possible, then there is really only a few options. Find a second hand one or buy a new Xbox. Unfortunately, cost more then a repairs.

Dust build up can be a major issue if you do not keep the area around the Xbox clean. Same problem can happen with PC. Every once in a while, it is best to make sure the area is clear. Animal hair can also clump up on the outside restricting air flow which
is also a problem. I hope you can find a simple fix that will not hurt the wallet.

It's really difficult not to get upset in a situation like this, especially when Xbox is what you love to play during your downtime, and when you have no money to upgrade or buy a replacement second hand console.
