xbox is asking me to subscribe even after I bought the game

I just bought a game today- Hell Let Loose and paid around $30. It shows up in my owned games. I downloaded the entire 17Gb. When I click on it to play, it takes me to a page where I have two options- either I subscribe to monthly unlimited games subscription or I subscribe monthly for max of 4 games per month. There is no other way out. If I click no, it takes me back to the first page of the game where it says "press any key to start" and then takes me back to the same 2 options.

I have uninstalled and re-installed/restarted the console without any change.

Let me know how to fix this problem.

That game is an online only game so it requires a Gold subscription (or Game Pass Ultimate which includes Gold) in order to play it.

I have 2 questions then.

1. Can I return the game and get money back?

2. How do I know beforehand as to which games will need online subscription and which won’t?

1. You can try submitting a refund request. https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/subscriptions-billing/buy-games-apps/refund-orders

2. Gold is required to play any game online unless it's a free-to-play game (like Fortnite). If you check the game's description it will also tell you if Gold is required or if it has single player.

that's console gaming for you, all consoles require an online sub to play online, the only platform where you don't pay to play online is pc.

But then why did I need to buy that game if I had to do monthly subscription regardless? That is a bit counterintuitive to me!
