Xbox gamesharing not working

Me and my bestfriend had been game sharing with each other for about 1 year now. We also added each other as family members on xbox. Everything was going well, no problems, we were playing each other’s games as normal. Until my Xbox Live Gold Membership
run out. My friend had his own membership and I also got my own. When mine run out, I thought that his membership will cover up mine since we were game sharing with each other. However it didn’t. We decided to not set his xbox as “My home xbox” to my xbox
so only him is game sharing his stuff to me. However, it still didn’t work. I logged into his xbox and removed it as my “Home xbox”. Then I set it again as my home xbox again. It still didn’t work after all that. Even when I did all the steps for game sharing.
NOW THIS IS THE PART I FIND ODD. Although I’m only on his account so he can share his gold to me and be able to play live again. I also noticed that all his new games that were all digital were not showing up on my xbox. If he was game sharing with me, then
that means I would be able to install and see his games. But I can’t. All I see is the same games I have on my account; the same games and in the exact order. Another thing, when I went on his account that has xbox live gold. I couldn’t even play online on
his account using my xbox. It almost feel like he was the only one able to do everything on his account. But if I log into his account I couldn’t even play an online game. It’s really weird, its like I’m still on my account even though I’m on his. Sorry if
these didn’t make sense at all. Am I doing something wrong here or do I just really need to renew my membership?
