xbox games from microsoft store

Hello everyone i hope someone may be able to help. i purchased a new desktop and was told i would be able to purchase xbox games from the store and play them on the computer. I don't have an xbox but hope to buy one down the line. I was informed if i bought xbox games for the computer then later they would appear on the xbox i buy as well. However i purchased the first red dead redemption game and it will not let me download to computer, it just says xbox? i am confused since i have never owned an xbox or any other platform. is there someway of installing this on the pc? or do i need to wait until i buy the xbox and then i will be able to install on both?? please help. thanks

there are limited games that are play anywhere titles, most games need to be purchased for each platform.

whoever told you that you can didn't tell you about the severely limited list of games that can be done that way.
