xbox gamertag not allowed?

Hi ive been trying to change my old gamertag on xbox recently and it wont allow me to it isnt taken or anything and it doesnt mean anything wrong i have used the name on everything else youtube twitch etc without a problem but xbox wont allow it and its
stupid i wanted to change it to itz i dont know if its a bug or something but microsoft needs to fix this as its stupid.

Just because a gamertag might show as available on xbox live does not mean it it isn't being used somewhere else on another Microsoft service.

It could also be linked to a banned account.

If the system says it's unavailable then it's unavailable,there's nothing anyone can do.

As from August 2019 if a tag does not sign into any Microsoft service for 2 years it may then be freed up so the earliest any unused tag would be made available is August 2021

xbox recently changed the letters allowed from 15 to 12 if that help

Hello @EliseR.1! I hope you're doing great out there despite the issue that you're experiencing.

There could be multiple reasons why you're experiencing these issues. If the gamer tag reports as not allowed it is only because it is blocked on the XBL side for a reason. However, since you are not using anything offensive, it is most likely due to prior abuse with a banned account (spam, cheating), hacked account (closed for security), or that it is taken. Try using a different word or a different combination of words.
