Xbox Gamertag change didn't work but still charged me.

I have been trying to change my Gamertag for three days now to no avail. In total I paid twice and got refunded once (I'm going to apply for a second refund now). I contacted Microsoft through chat and through the phone and they couldn't help me.

I am trying to change my "Xbox games that don't support the new gamertag system and all Xbox 360 experiences" (15 characters) Gamertag. I am fine with my "Xbox One console and Xbox apps" (12 characters and a # suffix) Gamertag.
When I try to do it through the browser, I gives me an error message "You already own that gamertag, if you’re happy with it you don’t need to make any changes." since I first need to enter my Gamertag with the suffix (which I don't want to change). When doing it from my Series S, after it charges me I get a message "Sorry, something went wrong. Try your gamertag again." and the gamertag doesn't change.

If the explanation wasn't clear, currently my 2 gamertags are:
Sleepy#4567 - Xbox One console and Xbox apps
Sleepy4567 - Xbox games that don't support the new gamertag system and all Xbox 360 experiences

I've been trying to set them to:
Sleepy#4567 (or any other number it assigns me) - Xbox One console and Xbox apps
SleepyEldrazi - Xbox games that don't support the new gamertag system and all Xbox 360 experiences

Is the only way to only change my "Xbox 360 experiences" Gamertag to buy 2 gamertag changes (in order to change both tags twice and get what I want)?

Apparently they have disabled that feature.. Give been trying to change my pic as well

Sometimes, it can take a couple of days for your gamertag change to take effect across Xbox services.

In the meantime, you can try restarting your Xbox, and removing and re-adding your profile to your console to see if the gamertag updates.

Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
Select Profile & system > Settings > Account > Remove accounts.
Select Profile & System > Add or switch > Add new.

Thanks I'll try that soon. I know I didn't create a new one over my old. I was playing my 360 regularly and one day I tried to login and it didn't work. There were some small charges made to my account which I was reimbursed for but I still didn't have
access to my gamertag while trying to login to Xbox live. The first gamertag that replaced it isn't even the one that is connected to this profile. So I have no idea how many times its even changed.

Yes you get one freebee if you will on changing your gamertag. I changed mine a few years ago and waited a year and then tried to change it again and it didn't charge me. But unfortunately in your case if you wanted to change it back it would be $10.
