Xbox Gamepass on PC throttles bandwidth when downloading game

    Hello,

When I download a game on Xbox Gamepass (PC) the download causes my wifi to stop working on all other devices. I believe the download on Xbox Gamepass is taking up all of the bandwidth, despite only downloading at around 11 MB/s. This issue only occurs on Xbox Gamepass - when I download games on Steam or other platforms, I don't experience this throttling.

So far I have tried to manually limit the bandwidth via the Delivery Optimization setting in windows but to no avail. As a workaround I have also tried limiting the bandwidth my PC uses via router settings. This is, however, not ideal.

I am posting here to see if anyone has a workaround to this issue.

    Thanks in advance.

    :)

How can I limit download speed on the XB1?

While there is no method (yet) to throttle the download speed on your console, simply start playing an online game.

As soon as a game uses the Xbox Live service, the Xbox automatically throttles it's background downloads, to maximize the bandwidth for your online multiplayer session.

I know this is a cumbersome workaround, but an online game requires fewer bandwidth than a download at full speed, and you should get better bandwidth for your other applications.

If all else fails, simply shut down the console into energy saving mode, so the console is completely turned off.

You can do that by holding the power button on the console for about 10 seconds, or going into the system settings and set the energy settings to "Power saving" mode instead of "Instant on".

That way the console is really shut down and doesn't do background downloads when you need the bandwidth.

    Upload speed

Does.your isp throttle your bandwidth at busy times? Some do, even when they claim they don't. Is your upload band with same as download?

    Won’t keep downloading please help

the problem is I have my x box one trying to download the battlefront 2 game and it keeps in a way stuttering... . My internet is 25mb...and i only have 150gb a month so I’m dying here. ....
When you say you "only" have 150GB a month, this sounds as if you are on a cellphone based internet connection like 3G/4G/LTE, right?

The thing is, that some internet providers with such a bandwidth cap also "throttle" the download speed of known "high bandwidth" sources.

Be it Steam, Netflix, or in your case the Xbox Marketplace.

    Try
testing with these suggestions here, if your ISP is throttling your downloads
    .

Also check in the network settings under bandwidth usage if your console already used up a lot of download volume during it's standby mode.

    Bandwidth throttling when streaming

It's not that the modem is causing the issue, it's that the switch likely is. The best way to test that is by eliminating the switch by plugging directly into the modem.

The Xbox is a stupid device when it comes to networking, for how smart it is. It really likes its connection to be direct. When streaming, it prioritizes where its focus will be, and it sounds like that's what is happening here. What I want to make
clear is that I do not think the issue is on your network specifically, but with how complicated the network looks to the Xbox.

Everything can work fine for other devices on your network, but the Xbox One is way more picky. Streaming itself is incredibly sensitive on the console. One thing out of place, and the console loses its mind. Because of the way a switch works, the console
doesn't think it's getting the best connection. For
    Windows 10 streaming
, the first thing suggested for poor quality is an ethernet connection for both the PC and console. Most users don't have a switch, so the insinuation here is that the connection should be to a router/modem. (Side note, I'll work to
see if we can make that more clear on the support page.) If your PCs don't automatically update apps, be sure your Xbox App is on the latest update, too. It should be on version 29.30.2001.00000.

Once we look at how it is with a direct connection, we'll be able look at what other options I have available. :)

    Any news on this?

i too am currently struggling with this issue.

Streaming is stable on high quality, even on very high i only get hardly any lag.

Both xbox one x and laptop are wired to a switch, in the living room

modem/router of ISP is in the garage and wired to the switch (cable runs inside the wall)

    Without streaming i can download/install a game at ±95mbps (as what my ISP provides, 100mbps d/l 10mbps u/l)

when i start streaming the download crawls to a deadslow 1.44mbps with peaks just below 2mbps.

While streaming at high quality remains reasonably stable, it is strange and a real pain you can't update games or install DLC or games for that matter while streaming.

I had another possible setup before,

    Modem/Router of ISP (in garage)

Dlink DIR-880L router in living room (setup as access point, wired to ISP modem)

Xbox one and laptop wired to the Dlink router.

    Same results there.

    Done multiply troubleshooting,

static IP, portforwarding, enable/disable uPnP, DMZ disabled, reseting xbox one, reset modem/router

and now using a switch instead of the Dlink router. (to eliminate extra security, DHCP setting, portforwarding etc... on that router)

By the looks of it, it isn't a hardware problem, but more to do with streaming services, either xbox or laptop side.

    on a side note.

i had an original xbox one a couple of weeks back. was in the preview program with it (fast ring) and had it all working like it should.

stable download speeds, even when streaming, stable streaming too, on at least high quality. (about a good year ago)

as time passes, the streaming went from great to good to poor. even on low settings i get bad stuttering/input lag etc...

Started troubleshooting the bad quality and nothing seemed to work.

as of december 2017, someone from xbox support suggested a full factory reset of the xbox one console, which i did and also opted out the preview program.

after a complete reset, xbox console, modem/router, laptop and setting it all back up to how it was before, with all latest updates for all devices including firmware or dlink router.

the streaming was somewhat good again, but now download speed drops again which made me real sad and angry. Later i bought an xbox one x and streaming was even better on that, (clean console, nothing installed, only on external HD) but again no decent downloadspeed
    when streaming.

Detail network statistics altho show ±95mbps download, but it never goes above 2mbps while streaming.

Hope you can find a solution for this as this is one off the reasons i stuck with xbox in this generation. streaming games on any windows 10 device in your household, while kids or wife is claiming the TV.

If you need futher info about my setup or specific setting on modem/router or xbox/laptop please ask.

(also applied for the preview beta program for my xbox one x again, could take up to 72hours to accept tho. maybe this could bring a solution again)

    Bandwidth throttling when streaming

    Hi MQ,

Thanks for coming back to me.
No worries at all! This is what I specialize in on my team. :3

So, I have a fully wired LAN, all devices are connected to it.

I have a router\modem connected to the main switch through an internal gbit switch port.

I am able to stream 4k TV from the Internet and 4k video from my media server without any issues. I realise video streaming probably uses a cache, and game streaming probably wouldn't work with a cache. I can transfer files at close to the max speed and
I only have speed issues with XBOX streaming.

I cannot connect all devices straight to the modem as it is a 5 port internal switch and I use a 16 port unmanaged switch.
Thanks for these details! To test out the speeds and streaming quality, can you have the Xbox One and PC plugged directly into the modem? I'm not saying set it up like that permanently, but it is a required troubleshooting step to rule out the switch. Are
you also able to let me know the manufacturer and model number of that device? I am researching similar issues with a FiOS device on 360, and want to ensure it's not related to that.

My question to you is this... Does the streaming traffic have to go through my modem in to the XBOX Live servers before making back it to my PC? If it does not then it does not make sense that my router\modem would cause an issue as the traffic
    never reaches the router\modem.

So, unless you are suggesting that streaming only work between a directly connected xbox and W10 PC, which would be crazy, then I don't understand how a gbit switch can bring the download only (not upload) speed down to 1.15 Mbit and cause streaming issues.

Unless you are saying I need a managed switch with higher throughput, which is massively expensive, and probably overkill for a home setup.

Last, I may have forgotten to mention that all devices are connected to the main switch, the XBOX too, and I don't have any issues on it when not streaming.

    Thx

    Peter
