The Microsoft FAQ page for Game Pass says "If you have an Xbox Game Pass subscription and have designated your home Xbox, you’ll automatically share your subscription with any profile signed in on that
console."

I assumed that meant other profiles on the xbox could use my game pass subscription to download games, not just play the games I downloaded, even if my profile is logged out.

The proper procedure is setting your Xbox as the home one with your primary account. After you've done that, any profile that signs into your 'Home' xbox will have the benefits such as Xbox Live and Game Pass.

Yes that is what I have done. I only have 1 xbox and it is setvas my home xbox.

1- Settings

2- Preferences

3- My Home Xbox

4- Make This My Home Xbox
