Xbox Game Pass PC Fullscreen Issues

I noticed that changing the resolution of games does not change the input signal for my monitor.

When I change e.g. My Time at Portia to 1920x1080 the input signal stays on 3840x2160 which is the resolution Windows is running on my PC.

It seems to me that the game is actually running in borderless windowed mode then true fullscreen

With input singal staying at 4k the freesync range of my display is very limited compared to 1920x1080 or 2560x1440

I don´t have any of this issues while playing games from Steam or Battle.net and I don´t want to change my windows resolution whenever I start playing a game from the Xbox Game Pass App

It's really a shame that Microsoft seems to ignore the details that make things great instead of just ok.

There are more and more games that have this exact issue and it's insulting that Microsoft doesn't seem to care about a fix as the feedback is ignored.

So far this happens on:

Sea of Thieves

State of Decay 2

Astroneer

And more......

Microsoft knows that PC gamers need proper fullscreen (not windowed borderless) to enjoy these titles the way they were meant to be played.

Every time I come across a game that does this and I simply uninstall it, the closer I get to asking myself why I continue to fund a project that Microsoft doesn't seem to care much about.

Perhaps it's from porting the titles across from console where there's no taskbar to cause problems as the OS is locked down on Xbox, and sheer laziness to just expect customers to be happy with these flaws?

I've found that there a few games on the Game Pass with this issue, but not many. The only fix I've found is to either change the display resolution prior to launch, or launch the game, alt-tab back to the desktop and change the resolution there. Then set
the resolution in the game to 1920x1080.

The quickest way to change Windows resolution is to right click anywhere in the desktop and select
Display Settings. I've got about 10 Game Pass games installed and only
Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice has the same issue as My Time at Portia. I wish I could give you a permanent fix, I can't unfortunately.

Unfortunately this is something only the game developer can fix.

What games are crashing? Some, or all of them?

Games from the Windows Store (or Game Pass) either have Fullscreen Optimization enabled by default or run in Windowed Borderless mode which shouldn't cause games to crash when attempting to ALT+TAB.

You can check whether Fullscreen Optimizations are enabled or not by opening the Xbox Game Bar via Win+G. If you are running in Fullscreen Exclusive, then the display brightness may be flicker. If you are in Fullscreen Optimizations, the Xbox Game Bar should pop up as an overlay.

Sounds more like a graphics driver issue to me.

Windows Apps can not have Fullscreen Optimization disabled as it's not possible to access their exe file to disable them.
