Xbox game not updating automatically

I believe the update was not part of this problem. The exact same thing happened to me with Dead Rising 3. I install the game. After the install, try to run the game. It pops me back to the xbox menu and won't play the game. I called tech support and
they suggested installing the game offline. Then when complete, getting it back online so the update for the game is installed after the whole game install. This still did not fix the problem.

Here's what did fix the problem:

I believe it came down to was a hard reboot of the console. After everything was installed, I shut down the console, unplugged it for a bit and then restarted it. Once I did this, everything played just fine.

Previous to that all the shutdowns I did were a simple shutdown and restart. That final time, unplugging it seemed to be the trick.

If your Console is on standby mode it will receive updates. For those updates to take effect you will need to initiate those updates when your console is on. Kind of like the first update to the console. It was received on your console and when you turned
it on it completed the download.



Same goes for games. If your console is on standby mode it will take effect once you start your console and complete the download. You can also access your game updates by going to your Games & Apps tile and highlighting the game in question, press the menu
button and search for update.



As far as the wifi being on, your console will receive updates even when its on standby mode and not wired in.

Same sort of thing for me. Forza 5 update today, turned on Xbox and was expecting Forza to be updated considering the update was out 6+ hours before and I had to wait for Forza to download the update after I had switched on the Xbox. Ive got the Xbox set
to "Instant On" and the "Auto download" set to on. Main system update from the other week was fine as that downloaded overnight and when I switched on the Xbox it was installing it straight away.

My question as well is if the Xbox is in standby mode should it still be connected to the router via wifi? My router shows a list of connected devices. Xbox in standby mode isnt shown on the list and so isnt connected via wifi, yet my PS4 in standby is shown
connected via wifi to the router. So should the Xbox be connected on wifi all the time when its in standby or just when its physically on? If its not connected via wifi when its in standby how does it get updates?
