  1. Xbox FreeSync | System Wide VSync Toggle

    Hi everyone.

From the moment FreeSync was added to Xbox my experience with it has been very hit and miss. It works with some games but not others. In fact the only game where I have noticed a substantial improvement was Tomb Raider as enabling FreeSync eliminates all screen tearing. Unfortunately there are many games where it just doesn't work at all and screen tearing is still evident.

From what I understand and have read, FreeSync on the Xbox does not engage unless full VSync is enabled for the specific game by the developers themselves. The issue with that is there are many games currently released that have target frame rates of 60fps such as Call of Duty and many of them do not have VSync enabled or any option to enable it, so they exhibit screen tearing. I understand the reason for this such as input latency etc. But as I understand, FreeSync is ideally supposed to work in conjunction with VSync where Vsync will only engage if a game falls below the displays FreeSync range. This being the case, having VSync enabled on a game like Call of Duty or any other 60fps game that largely holds its target frame rate shouldn't really impact the experience in any negative way.

For me personally, screen tearing has always been one of the biggest issues in gaming, it can be massively disruptive in respect of any gaming experience, it's not something that would be acceptable when watching a movie and shouldn't be acceptable when playing a game.

It seems that some developers for whatever reason really are not too concerned whether their game screen tears or not and in many cases the PlayStation version of a game will have VSync enabled and the Xbox will have to make do with Adaptive Sync, I believe in may instances due to the developers targeting higher resolutions for the Xbox One X.

As many displays now have either FreeSync or VRR support and many more games running at 60fps for the next generation. Would a possible solution be to include a VSync toggle in the Xbox display settings so that people wishing to use FreeSync to eliminate things like tearing can use it conjunction with FreeSync?

VRR Gsync / AMD Freesync Premium

I left VRR on. But when choosing AMD Freesync, three options are provided: high, wide, off. I left "high", because it feels like the picture is getting smoother, but maybe it's autosuggestion already))

I haven't been able to find a scientific/official explanation of the difference between "high" and "wide" for setting up AMD Freesync, so it's bugging me.

    And sorry for my English)

Stuttery edges/textures when panning camera quickly in some games

    Hello, Jimbo7SSBM

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I understand that you’re experiencing stuttering or jittering in some games when panning the camera quickly. This can indeed be a frustrating issue. Here are a few suggestions that might help:

    1. Inconsistent Frame Times: This happens when frame times are inconsistent. You can download a game monitor your frame times. It should be around 16ms for 60fps, 8ms for 120fps and so on. If you see this value fluctuating a lot, it can cause weird stutters like you described.
    2. Microstutter: One way of combating micro stutter is to disable vsync, but that has its own drawbacks. Now when a frame is ready from the engine, it will show up on your display. The problem now is that this can lead to tearing —where the next frame arrives in the middle of a screen update.
    3. Game Settings: You could also try adjusting some game settings:
      • Lower screen resolution setting
      • Toggle VSync or FreeSync
      • Decrease anti-aliasing
      • Drop texture filtering
      • Reduce texture quality
Remember, every system is unique and what works for one might not work for another. It’s all about finding the right balance for your specific hardware configuration. Good luck!

    Windows frame cap on games

I'm Samy an independent advisor. Welcome to the Xbox community. How are you?

Check your monitor's frame rate and if vsync is on, if vsync is on the frame rate will be limited to your monitor's refresh rate.
