1. XBOX for PC "Gaming Services" glitch.

I was playing Outriders when it froze. I killed the game in task manager, and then the XBOX app thought I was still in the game, so it would not launch. This has happened in Steam before, but the usual restarting the app didn't fix it. So I restarted the computer. Now it doesn't show that I am in a game, but it keeps saying I need "Gaming Services" which I allow it to install, and it changes nothing. Looking at the app page, "Gaming Services" is installed.

Using other forum posts as guidance, I tried repairing, refreshing, and reinstalling these things, but it's not doing anything.

It's pretty bonkers that something as simple as force quitting a game can make life with XBOX this hard.

I did see a comment somewhere about having games installed in a different location than the app was installed, which is the case for me, but I believe it was addressing a problem with launching the game. But my problem starts before even trying to launch a game. I can't even see the games at this point. I could uninstall the games from the Installed Apps page, but with something like six individual game launchers, I can't be sure which games are associated with the XBOX app... and I'm not trying to delete TB's of data on a whim. I'll destroy my data cap trying to get some of these games back.

Any suggestions?

I decided to download the app from the website instead of the app store, and get this:

XBOX for PC "Gaming Services" glitch.

Update: after several attempts to cancel downloads including repairing/resetting/uninstalling XBOX and related things, I gave up. It was stuck at 0% download, and no games could launch. But the next day, everything was downloaded and installed. I'll guess the solution to the problem was in Kathy's second response. Then I just had to wait. Likely the UI is just bad, but things were getting downloaded in the background.

If this happens every time a game locks up, I'll probably just throw my computer out the window and consider becoming Amish.

Thank you so much for your help, Stacy. I would not have been able to do this without you.

Hello DizzyBrandizzle,

You're welcome and thanks for the details you have provided.

April 11, 2023—KB5025239 (OS Build 22621.1555) - Microsoft Support - Based on your reply, this is your current version for Windows. That could mean you are not part of PC Insider. However, if any case you are part of PC Insider then the device you are using is open for testing features that can be improved before general public released.

We would like to suggest you this troubleshooting to try.

Run system scans

Run a full system scan. This will check and restore corrupted system files.

1. Type CMD in the search.
2. Right-click command prompt > Open as administrator.
3. Copy and paste each command and run it one at a time:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealthDISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealthDISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

1. Once done, type another command to run the System File Checker.
2. In the same command prompt window.
3. Copy and paste this command:

sfc /scannow

1. Wait for the command to finish and then restart your device.
2. Restart your PC and check if it now works.

We will wait for your update if the Minecraft Launcher will still be stuck or finish its download.

Regards,

XBOX for PC "Gaming Services" glitch.

Progress! It has not been solved, but progress has been made. Thanks for helping me through this.

The XBOX app no longer asks for Gaming Services.

The games show up, but I cannot launch any of them. It is trying to download a game that was queued before the crash, but it is not making any progress. It will not let me pause the download or cancel it.

I reset gaming services, uninstalled XBOX, restarted, reinstalled XBOX, restarted, and the situation persists.

Note that outriders showed in the "installed" list, but when I clicked on it, I was prompted to install it. I accepted the install, but nothing happened because... Aragami 2 is stuck?

Also, note that the system process is at a pretty high at 14% when normally my computer rests below 5%.

Thank you for your reply. I want to clarify that the current issue has nothing to do with any game. The XBOX app is not working (see screenshots). Addressing your issues:

1. I don't believe the issue is about a specific game. The XBOX app is not able to see Gaming Services, so it says there are no games (but I can see the games in Installed Apps. But to answer your question, no. There are none of those apps installed on the PC.
2. In the About page of the XBOX app, it says PC Insider. But I don't know what that means.
3. 22H2 (OS Build 22621.1555)
4. Respectively: 2303.1001.7.0, 11.76.5001.0, 5.823.3261.0
5. As mentioned in my post, and shown in the screenshots, I have uninstalled and reinstalled gaming services (multiple times). It does not seem to have an effect on how the XBOX app works. Yes, I have seen the troubleshooting steps at that link, no they do not change the reported behavior.
6. This is not a suggestion I have seen before. I just tried it. It has been trying to install for about 20 minutes. No error, but I'd be surprised if it is supposed to take this long considering I could have had a completely new game downloaded and installed by now. I will leave it until it succeeds or fails... but at this rate, I'll bet it just sits there forever.

1. UPDATE: Several hours later, and the install is still pending.
