    Hey Sablefun, there are a couple reasons why your Green Light is flashing.

    1. The green console light will flash slowly when downloading in the background while it is off.

    Reason: After you turn off the console, the console enters a low-power mode. The center of the power button on the console flashes green every four seconds until the download is completed. The other lights around the power button are off, and no images are
    displayed on your monitor or television.

    If you want your console to shut down immediately and not continue to download content in the background, you can turn off the background download option.

    2. The System, is cooling down. That explains itself.

    when I shut off my xbox it stays on the power button flashes and the gears run and you have to turn it on then off to turn it off

    You probably have background downloading on which means that when you shut the console down it will blink like that and stay on temporarily while the Cloud is updated.

    If you would like to turn off background downloading then simply follow the instructions at this link.

    I am wondering if you have anything plugged into the USB ports on your XBOX because I have noticed that if i have anything still plugged into my Xbox will keep supplying power to the USB device. When it does this the Green lights on the front will continue
    to flash.

    Also if you have the Xbox setup to continue background downloads after the power is shut off it will flash the Green light while it does this.

    The Green flashing Lights also may be part of the Family Timer you you have setup as a way to let you know that the System is in not allowing any other use until the timer has reset.
