Xbox Family Safety Bug: No Way to Manually Approve Multiplayer Access w/o Disabling...

Please read, it affects any parent using Xbox Family Safety.

I discovered a flaw in how Xbox handles Content Restrictions for child accounts, prompting a long support call with Microsoft (shoutout to Jared, who was fantastic).

We were trying to let one of our kids play online multiplayer in Ultimate Chicken Horse (rated 'E') on our Series X. All profiles are part of our Microsoft Family, signed into our Home Xbox. The child’s profile:

    • Has correct DOB
    • Has both multiplayer and cross-network play set to “Allow”
    • Has age-appropriate content filters (set to 14yo)
    • Can play the game offline just fine

But they cannot access multiplayer — and the system never triggered a parent approval request. Other siblings (even younger ones) can play online, despite settings being identical.

Here’s the kicker: - The Xbox Family app shows “Existing Approvals” but has no way to add a new one. - The Microsoft Family website doesn’t offer any way to approve Xbox game titles — only web filters. - After attempting multiple fixes (removing the profile, clearing cache, etc.), the only "solution" was to change the child’s DOB to an older age.

That unlocked multiplayer, but now we lose parental control and content reporting for that child’s account.

This is a broken system: - No manual override for game title approvals - No approval prompt for multiplayer access - No visibility into what’s being blocked

Microsoft needs to fix this. Parents should be able to elect to manually approve specific games, especially when they’re rated 'E', and multiplayer is allowed.

I've sent feedback to Microsoft (haven't yet found a direct email), as my ticket was closed out after the "solution".

I've also emailed Clever Endeavor, copied in part below:

To be clear, I do not think this is directly attributable to your game. There is one component (that I know of) that could be a Dev choice; mainly though I think your team should be made aware of this issue.

The only possible aspect I can think of that might come from the UCH side is that the age threshold —for which the game would trigger notifying a MS Family Manager— is set below [our] 14 year-old designation for content approval. |OR| That the game is internally set to prohibit online multi-player for anybody designated below a certain age (say 18, i.e.).

Update: The following day, the younger child (who previously had access) is now receiving the same blocking error [from the in-game UI] to the online portion of that game.

If you’ve run into this, please share or up vote to gain attention.

HI arjan, it seems like it is a problem with your account being restricted with 'Parental Control', which sees your account as a child account and prevent any use of purchasing and downloading games that relate to violence

You may refer to this article, it is the same way to disable the family account option: https://support.xbox.com/en-GB/help/Family-Online-Safety/child-accounts/approve-child-purchases

Why can't play gta 5 online even though I have xbox game pass core

If the previous steps do not work, check these steps.

Are you able to successfully access online multiplayer/matchmaking in any other game? It's possibly your online safety and privacy settings on your account - you need to have all online multiplayer options enabled/enabled. Refer to: https://support.xbox.com/help/family-online-saf... If you can't access your privacy settings: https://support.xbox.com/help/family-online-saf... If the specific error only occurs in GTA 5, you would need to contact Rockstar Support: https://support.rockstargames.com/categories/20... Here to help.

Adding money to a microsoft account.

Even with your child having their own funds and bank, it's important to think about them making purchases that can cause their funds and bank accounts to be overdrawn. I would suggest reading through the Family and Online Saftey on Xbox Support to make an
    informed decision.
