    Xbox external capture - stopped being able to record over 30 seconds....


    I've been using my USB key to record up to an hour on my Xbox series x. Today the Xbox series x does recognize my USB key but will only record 30 seconds worth of gameplay.

    I can confirm that the USB key is selected as the capture location. When I try to record, I press the Xbox button navigate to capture and select start recording if I do that again immediately I see that the recording will only record for 30 seconds. If
    I let the recording continue it automatically stops at 30 seconds despite the fact that the capture location is my USB key which has 64 gigs free

    How do I record 5 minutes of gameplay instead of 30 sec?

    You currently can't record more than 30 seconds at a time.

    To record more you need an external capture device like Elgato offer but Microsoft is bringing more options over the coming months.

    Press X to record

    The recording captures the last 30ish seconds when you press it, so it sounds like it's working right.

    The DVR is basically always recording. If you snap the DVR app, you can do the option to start and stop up to 5 minutes.

    The X button just quick grabs the last 30 seconds.

    Hopefully this helps as I see this post is from well over a month ago.

    If you use an external drive as the capture location, you can record footage at 1080p that's way longer than 1 minute, but it has 2 important limitations.

    1. You have to start and stop the recording manually. You can't use the "record that" feature to capture longer clips of something that just happened; that would still be limited to 1 minute at 1080p.

    2. Clips captured on external storage cannot be shared over Xbox Live.

    I think it's a good solution if you're recording footage to transfer over to a PC, edit, then upload to YouTube, but it's no good if you want to capture longer clips to share with friends over Xbox Live.

    I wonder why they reduced the recording times though. I'm sure when I got my Xbox Series X, there was a 2 minute option for 1080p, but now, as you said, it's only 1 minute.

    To be able to record party chat audio you will need an Elgato or anything external capture card as that will capture any audio on your Xbox (Party, Game, All audio)
