XBOX Elite Series 2 Controller PC Will Not Work Via USB Cable (Works Fine Via Bluetooth)

I purchased an XBOX Elite Series 2 controller, new, about 2 months ago. The controller communicates with the PC via Bluetooth. But I prefer to play wired for direct input, lower lag, and to avoid the intermittent connectivity issues that come with Bluetooth on occasion.

Up until about a week ago, my controller worked fine while plugged in via the USB cable it came with. Now it does not. The XBOX Accessories App on my PC does not even recognize my controller when I plug it in on the PC via the USB cable. It just sits at the "Connect a device" screen.

Here is what I think is the pertinent information:

1) OS - WIN10 21H2 (build 19044.1387)

2) Controller firmware version - 5.11.3118.0

3) XBOX Accessories version - 300.210.13001.0

4) USB cable does charge the controller (both via the charging dock and the direct connection)

5) Controller connects to PC via Bluetooth and is usable wirelessly

6) Controller connects to XBOX One X wirelessly

7) Controller connects to XBOX One X via USB cable

So, basically, the only thing that does not seem to work is the one thing I really want to work. The controller does not connect and is not recognized by my PC via a direct connection via the USB cable. Nor is it even picked up by the XBOX Accessories app on the PC anymore. I admit I am a bit perplexed.

I'm running into this issue too. I can pair my series 2 controller with my PC via bluetooth and it works fine. However, as soon as I use the usb cable and plug it into my PC, like if I wanted to charge it while playing, it works fine. Unfortunately if I
then unplug from the USB cable, the controller no longer pairs via Bluetooth. I have to forget the device in Windows bluetooth settings, then re-pair it like it's the first time I've ever done it.

It's like by connecting via USB resets the controllers memory of connecting via bluetooth or something. Quite annoying.

I also agree, we should be able to configure the controller wirelessly somehow. Whether it be via some new dongle thing or preferably via bluetooth.

I wish I could tell you that worked. What you wrote made perfect sense and it was actually kind of the direction I was going to go with my troubleshooting next.

I followed the steps listed. I have rolled back the firmware on the XBOX Elite Series 2 controller to version 4.8.1908.0. But it still does not connect. The XBOX Accessories app still does not recognize it when plugged in via USB. It does charge fine.

Thank you for the suggestion though. It was a good one.
