Xbox Elite Controller replacement?

My Xbox Elite controller has become faulty after some use. (the rubber grips are peeling off) A colleague of mine claims that you can get a free replacement due to the QC issues with the controller.

TL;DR - Where do I go and who do I contact to get a replacement controller, or am I out of luck?

If it's out of warranty, you can try contacting support. but there are no guarantees they will send a free one. 1-800-4my-xbox if you're in the US/Canada or Contact Us | Xbox Support

Is it a standard controller or an Elite controller?

If it’s standard you’ll have to replace the controller unfortunately. If it’s an elite you can get it serviced or replaced if it’s still under warranty.

My day One controller was problem free until a few months ago when I dropped it hard on one of the bumpers, my fault nothing to do with the controller. Replacement new controller was a sturdier build and was working perfectly. Had to replace console
so got an Elite model with the Elite controller and I can confirm it is Elite.
