Xbox controllers won’t connect to start forced update

Hello Everyone,

When I turn on my Xbox it says its “update time” and gives me options to start update skip or turn off ps4. The catch is now none of my controllers will connect either via cable or wireless.

I know for a fact my cable is fine and that the controllers work because with both i removed the batteries, plugged them into the xbox and they both powered on but wouldnt connect.

I also use them on my PC. I got the windows 10 xbox accessories app and checked both controllers to see if they needed updates and both were up to date.

so Im left with with an xbox that needs to update and no way to connect anything to it to update it. I even tried connecting with my smart phone but it cant find the xbox, most likely due to it needing to update. Also attempted to use usb keyboard.

Any ideas?

I somehow fixed it by holding down the power button as long as I could and then turning it back on. For some reason it booted to the green flashing xbox one screen and my controller connected during that before the update screen popped up again. Im not sure
why or how because ive turned the xbox on and off before to no avail. Never have held it down like that however.

Maybe you guys are just good luck.

The easiest way is to restart the console by pressing and holding the power button for about 10 seconds, remove the battery and replace it

that is called Power Cycling and it clears the Xbox's memory cache of residual bits of data.

it is the recommended first step in most troubleshooting for Xbox One (and does solve the majority of common problems).

Hey Vincent,

Yes, you can use the controller while connected to the console using usb cable. This won’t affect performance and won’t damage the controller. Using the controller wired of course means you don’t need to use batteries.

You can also update the controller while connected through USB cable.

Standard xbox one controllers require a micro USB cable. The elite series 2 and xbox adaptive controllers require USB type C cable.
