  1. Xbox Controller Won't Power On With Batteries Inside

I use an Xbox One wireless controller (X899785-001 model 1537) for gaming on PC. I have always used it as a wired controller with no issue. Recently I am attempting to use it wireless but it does not turn on with batteries inside. Phenotype as follows:

    1. Controller with no batteries, when plugged in to PC with micro USB cable:
      turns on
      automatically (no button press required)
    2. Controller with batteries, when not plugged in to PC: does NOT turn on when home (big X) button is pressed or held
    3. Controller with batteries, subsequently plugged into PC with micro USB cable:
does NOT turn on when home (big X) button is pressed or held
    4. Controller with no batteries, plugged in to PC with micro USB cable (turns on) then batteries inserted while on:
      controller stays on
    5. Controller with no batteries, plugged in to PC with micro USB cable (turns on) then batteries inserted while on, then cable unplugged:
controller stays on but home button starts blinking (no connection); if home button held at this point the controller turns off (stops blinking)

I am using Duracell AA batteries, I have tested 4 or 5 pairs that all work in other devices so I think the issue is not with the batteries. Read with multimeter at 1.57-1.59V each. I also think the home button is working fine since it brings up the game
bar on my PC when I press it, and I am able to turn off the controller with the home button in case #5 above.

For troubleshooting, I have attempted updating the controller firmware with Xbox Accessories app on my PC while the controller is connected with USB cable. The current firmware version is 2.3.2381.0 and no more updates are available (didn't record the old
firmware version but it was whatever the controller shipped with since this was the first time I updated.

I was hoping to buy a Xbox controller wireless adapter so I can game from my couch but I don't want to spend the money if my controller can't even turn on without a cable. Any help would be much appreciated!!

    :)

The reason my controller is not work with a cable because i need a rechargeable battery?

Hi, if you are using the xbox one controller on the xbox one you should be able to use it with the usb cable even without any batteries inside the controller. Do not use the cable if you have inside the controller non-rechargable batteries, because this
could damage the controller and the batteries.

    Xbox wireless controller

    Hi,

Only battery packs designed specifically for Xbox controllers (Microsoft or third party) will charge when a USB power cable is applied.

AA batteries do not charge in the controller, whether they are rechargeable AA, Alkaline single use or cheaper Zinc-Carbon single use batteries. They won't receive any current and can not therefore 'overcharge'.

When the controller contains these types of battery, the power will only come from the device the controller is connected to via the USB cable.

Wireless controller signal strength through thick walls

I suppose it depends on the thickness of the walls. Usually the signal strength varies depending on how far away from the Xbox the controller is, and sometimes the power left in the batteries. A high powered battery pack and a controller that is no too far
away from the actual wireless receiver on the Xbox should work fine, but there's always the possibility that the signal won't get through the walls.

    Day one edition controller broken

My Day One controller won't even power on. I have tried 8 batteries plus a play and charge battery pack that works fine on my other controller. Sure they will replace it but I doubt it will be with another Day One controller
