xbox controller not being detected by pc

hi i have recently got back into playing some games on my PC and i figured to use my controller since i am more comfortable with it i have done this in the past so i know it works and when i plugged it in it vibrated and nothing i have used different cables
and different USB ports on the PC and nothing and when i press the home button it either turns on my Xbox, sync to my Xbox like how it would normally or if the Xbox is completely off the controller wont turn on at all i have tried trouble shooting Xbox accessories
app doesn't work because you need a connected controller and my drives do not need updating so i don't know whats the problem
