    Xbox Controller Issues After Firmware Update


    After a firmware update to my Elite 2 controller I'm experiencing the following symptoms:

    • Outgoing audio is blocked, but can still hear friends talking. They cannot hear me.
    • Left stick will start going in one direction, and just continue to cycle through a menu.
    • All other buttons on the controller will stop working. Including the Xbox button.
    • Sometimes the issue does not stop all control but adds significant delay in responsiveness. Click "A" 1 second later the game thinks I clicked "A" or Right stick to the left, 1 second later I did a full 180.
    • It will happen for a given period of time, then return to normal for a bit. Sometimes the issue will repeatedly occur where my friends can hear every other syllable of me talking (that's when I notice the "Lag" issue)

    I would think the firmware was the problem, but I swapped to another Xbox controller I had laying around last night and the same thing happened with that one as well.

    This happening while playing Call Of Duty: Vanguard. I don't play many other games. So, maybe it's not isolated to this one.

    Did this issue happen after updating your firmware?

    Does the controller work normally when connected via USB cable?

    The latest Xbox controller firmware update may affect Bluetooth connectivity and performance with some older non-Xbox devices. If your controller is having Bluetooth-related issues after a firmware update, you can choose to revert your controller to an earlier firmware version to correct the problem.

    On your Xbox console, press the Xbox button to open the guide, and then go to Profile & system > Xbox Support > Get help > Help topics > Hardware & networking > Controllers > My Xbox controller has connection issues after the last update. Select Check your controller’s firmware to open the controller firmware reversion screen in the Xbox Accessories app, and then follow the instructions in the app.

    Note: You can also use this link to revert your controller’s firmware on a Windows device. You will need to have the Xbox Accessories app for Windows installed for the Check your controller’s firmware link to work. If you don’t have the app, get it here: https://aka.ms/xboxaccessoriesupdateapp

    Did you update the controller on the Xbox console, or did you update it on the PC? The Firmware on the console is much higher than the PC, so the latest Xbox controller firmware update may affect Bluetooth connectivity and performance with some older non-Xbox devices. If your controller is having Bluetooth-related issues after a firmware update, you can choose to revert your controller to an earlier firmware version to correct the problem.

    On an Xbox Console:

    Press the Xbox button to open the guide, then go to Profile & system > Xbox Assist > Get Help > Help topics > Console & accessories > Controller > My controller has connection issues after the last update. Select Check controller firmware to open the controller firmware reversion screen in the Xbox Accessories app, then follow the instructions in the app.

    Once you revert the firmware, try connecting to the PC again and see if it has the same issues.
