Xbox Controller connected but non of the buttons will work except home button

OK strange new development/observation

it appears if i plug the controller into the xbox via usb, than still the home button doesn't work, HOWEVER if i remove the batteries making the controller dependent on the xbox for power then the HOME BUTTON WORKS IMMEDIATELY! while plugged into the xbox
with a working home button if i put the batteries back into the controller, without hitting anything, the home button stops working again.

and remember the controller will turn the xbox on via home button even while not connected by USB...

what in the world is up with this controller?!

I went out and bought a play and charge kit it connects but then every button except the home button stops working and when I unplug the charger it just starts flashing again and I don't think I have updated my controllers

I am also having the same problem. I have mine plugged into a surge protector as well.

Tried connecting to the Wall outlet and no luck, still freezes once per week.

The thing is, with its 3 operating systems, the Xbox should be "unfreezable", no need to do a power cycle. :/

I get this sometimes and the way I fix it is to do a power cycle:

Hold the power button on the console until it turns off. Wait until the power supply's light turns orange and then reboot. It may take longer than usual.

The Xbox One is in instant on mode (like standby) by default and this resets the xbox and actually fixes a lot of various issues.
