    Xbox controller always registers a mic


    My Xbox One controller always registers a mic being plugged in even when there is nothing connected to the controller. This is stopping me from being able to talk using a mic which is a problem because i am a streamer. How do i fix this.

    Can i ask, does your controller have the built in 3.5mm jack port?

    I had an issue like this last year. All it turned out to be was a dirty contact inside the jack port.

    I took the cotton head off an earbud and wrapped it round a matchstick as the earbud was too big to fit in the port. I then used electrical cleaning fluid to dab the cotton in and gently wiped inside.

    Same thing happens with my phone jack sometimes aswell, gets clothes fibres stuck inside.

    I would recommend you do a power cycle of your xbox and check if there are any updates your controller need first if you havnt already done this first though.

    To clarify my issue for comparison. I can hear other people with the Xbox One Chat Headset. They cannot hear me. In addition the mic icon in the Xbox Live Party Chat Menu is ALWAYS ON regardless of whether or not the mic is plugged in or the controller is

    First, welcome to the Xbox community. I'm sorry you're having this problem.

    Before we try any different solutions, would you know how to tell me if your controller is up to date, please check this by following the instructions below.

    Solution1:

    Instructions to install the update should automatically appear. Follow the instructions, and don’t disconnect the USB cable while the update is in progress. The process can take up to 3 minutes. If instructions to install the update don't automatically appear, you can start the process manually. To do this, press the Xbox button  to open the guide, choose Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories, and then select the controller you want to update. On the Xbox Wireless Controller screen, select “…” to check the firmware version for your controller. If it says “Update,” select Firmware version, and then follow the steps provided.

    *If you use the headset on the controller, make sure you have it plugged into your controller at the time of upgrade.

    Solution 2:

    When you set up a profile for a child on the console, the Privacy & online safety settings let the parent profile control who can communicate via chat with the child on Xbox Live. In the Privacy & online safety section, you can enable chat communication in the child's profile. For players under age 17, the default setting is Friends Only.
