Xbox Console Companion for Windows 10 - Using as keyboard

Hoping someone can help with this please. I've had the companion app up and running on my Win10 laptop for a while, and having it connected to my Xbox One I've been able to play ESO on the Xbox and use the companion app on the laptop as a keyboard for typing
messages. For any of you that play ESO you'll know how big part text chat plays, so this setup is amazing. This would normally work by me opening the dialog box on the console for chat which would then automatically bring up the text box on the companion app
for me to type away.

The companion app gave me everything I needed too, like access to friend requests and messages etc. Last 2 days the companion app will not bring up the dialog box for chat and now won't display messages either, saying to install the new Xbox app. This new
Xbox app doesn't have any functionality for connecting to the console. I've disconnected from the console in the companion app, I've then forgotten it and reconnected, but nothing is fixing it.

What is going on here? Is the companion app supposed to still allow me to connect to the console and use it as a keyboard, or have they removed that? If it's still supposed to work, how can I fix it?

My experience with windows Xbox apps has been terrible so far, things just keep changing and then not working. Even if I can get the companion app working as a keyboard again it means I'm going to have to have the Xbox app open too for messages. What's the
ultimate intention here? I hope it's just to have one app that just, you know, works.
